Here is a questions I've been curious about. I always thought that when police park in the middle of a median to run radar at night, that they had to have their parking lights on for safety of others but I've noticed around my county that most don't. I guess this made me curious because if I needed to pull off the side of the road suddenly, I wouldn't be able to see the car until it was too late. =/ Are there any regulations for that?

No, there are no requirements for police to leave their lights on when running stationary radar.

Old wives tales are great. They are even greater when people plead not guilty to an offense like speeding based on their mistaken belief that we have to do _____________________________ when running speed enforcement.

No, risky is leaving your lights on so drunks can become confused and plow into the back of your car. You would be amazed at how the rear ends of police cars become magnets for drunk drivers.

If you're going the proper speed then you would have plenty of time to slow down without hitting a vehicle parked in the median. Your headlights are required to illuminate a distance of at least 200 feet in front of your vehicle. Striking a police car (or any vehicle for that matter) parked in the median and using the excuse that its lights weren't on isn't going to fly. Vehicles are only required to be lighted while on the roadway, not in a grass or concrete median off of the road. Originally Posted by TheDonna

Last time I checked, the median is for emergency vehicles and DOT vehicles only. So there is no reason for you to ever be in the median..
On a clear night, I can see the other deputies emergency lights at least 10 miles away.
But it isnt flat here LOL
