    State Police Question?

I've seen a couple of State Police Agencies that have Special Agent for their investigative division(Illinois, Virginia, etc). Does that mean you would apply for a Special Agent position in the Virginia State Police or become a Trooper then switch?

In Va, you have to be a Trooper first (for several years), and then put in for SA when allowed. The only direct-hire SA position I've ever seen was looking for a specific skill-set (CPA) and they were only looking for 1 person, but they still had to go through the full hiring process/academy.

TX, you must work four years as a Trooper and then apply for CID Agent (Criminal Investigative Division). You must have 8 years on to apply for a Texas Ranger position.
