Department still testing after qouta is met?

I tested with Irving, Texas PD on 12 Jun 2010. They stated that due to budget issues they were only hiring 8 recruits out of the 180 or so that passed the Exam and PT test. I've gone to the pre-poly interview and my BI has been started. My question is, if they're only hiring 8 recruits from the June test, why would they be having another exam in December? I'm fairly new to the process. I don't understand if they already have the 8 recruits, then why continue to waste department personel time and resources to continue background checks and schedule another exam date?

Because the left hand does not know what the right hand is doing!
Seriously, sounds like a question the Irving PD could answer.

Because until the positions are filled, they are unfilled. You catch my meaning? They have no way of knowing how many viable candidates are in the old test, thus as long as there are vacancies, all steps of the process will continue to be run.

Gotchya, thanks for the replies. I've always heard common sense is an Officer's greatest weapon. I tend to hold this belief true in most life situations. Obviously I'm missing a piece of the pie.

If it's the filling, you should look around for Chevy...
