If you get pulled over for driving with a suspended license in New Jersey, and it's your third offense, is there jail time and a fine or just a fine? I know it depends on the track record and what not but in general...?

He's probably already gotten the ticket.....

In that case he can expect a mandatory 36 month insurance surcharge, a fine, further suspension and off course, there will be jail time and/or community service follwoed by probation.

Wow. Here in Texas if your driving with a suspended license and its your second offense its a Class B and has jail time and a fine with it...

In general? How about this? If your driver's license is suspended there is a reason! If you get caught driving while it is suspended the sanctions were obviously too lenient; ergo: Stricter sanctions must be imposed and I would strongly suggest that you pack a tooth brush when you appear before the court. Yes, you will probably go to jail and have to pay a fine. The blatant manner in which you flaunt your actions against the will of the people will earn you a stay at the Graybar.

Here it depends on what the suspension is for. Failure to appear = jail. DUI = jail. Insurance = probably not jail. Too many moving violations = probably jail.

First of all, it was for a parking ticket from like 2 years ago. There was no letter mailed saying that the license was suspended, and the surcharge and reinstatement fee WAS paid. it was a problem with the systems computers I suppose that has now been resolved. Obviously if the fact that the license was still suspended was KNOWN I wouldn't have let him drive. So that's a stupid fact to state, thanks. Lastly, of course there's always a reason for a suspended license, but that doesn't mean it's a good one. Obviously the sanctions weren't too lenient, the system was having a problem, which is no fault of our own. The fact that one can go to jail for failure to pay a parking ticket is actually a flaw with the system and pretty sad if you ask me.
Don't break the law if you can't pay the fine! Any ticket is "in lieu of an arrest." So you can go to jail in NY/NJ for speeding, talking on your cell phone, failing to single a lane change, parking, etc.... Remember that next time a cop stops you and gives you a ticket. He is already giving you a gift by not towing the car and arresting you.
And if you don't like the system, don't complain about it....do something about it! Run for freeholder and start making the legislation rather than complaining about it becuase you forgot for two years to pay a ticket.

I'd disagree. You are telling me there was a problem with the system on three separate occasions? I can understand (maybe) the first time, but after that I have a hard time believing that some computer or clerical error continued to cause you to get suspended license convictions. Even you were to get a ticket because of a computer error, you could always go to court and the judge would dismiss it.
Apparently that didn't happen on two previous occasions, and I'm guessing a judge won't buy it this time either.
Also I have to ask, what was the original offense that gave the officer the probable cause to conduct a traffic stop in the first place only to find out that the license was suspended- Meaning: we don't just pull people over for driving suspended, we catch them driving suspended because we are going to cite them for something else.
