Question Best way to memorize TEN CODES?

What's the best way to memorize ten codes without just reading them over and over? Thanks.

We quit 10 codes in the mid 80's. When I started, we used them for everything and the only way to learn was carry a card with you and keep referring to until you have them memorized. I think about the time we went to 800 mhz system, we stopped bothering with them.

We use a few "12" codes to describe a few situations like dead bodies, fatal accidents and so forth. Even that's kind of a waste of time, everyone that listens to the radio figures out what they are. It's probably more habit than anything now.

Evidentally not our area, if you go to this scpdny.com you will hear my local LEO's talking in ten code. They don't do it alot but I did hear it. I heard a dispatcher say 10-9 which means "Oxygen/Inhalator".

For us, we use it in our regular talk with each other. We talk to each other in code. Ashamed to say it, but I occasionally do it to the wife and other family members when talking about certain things.

    It works though.

Very few agencies use 10 codes any more. And if they do it's only a few and not really universial. That's the reason why most are going to "plain" speak. You have LEO's from one agency talking to LEO's from another agency and the 10 code for 1 agency is completly different then the other agency. The result is a lot of confusion.

    I memorized 10 a day, til I learned all 100.
However, reality is that you will only use about half of them
Thats why most police vehicles have a copy of the 10 codes on the visor.

    We are still using them.
Other for the few odd ones we use for certain things,
    Kansas is somewhat uniform.

Of course, Nebraska and Oklahoma used a totally different
set of codes, so who knows what they are saying LOL
On a clear night, I can see the other deputies emergency lights at least 10 miles away.
But it isnt flat here LOL

Only way is to use them day in day out. 10-09 always meant repeat where I come from, retdetsgt.
Anyways, a lot of agencies in this area have, for the most part, abandoned 10 codes.
One agency I worked for absolutely forbid Deputies from using 10 codes. The big boss had not an ounce of street experience.........so when he decided to listen in late at night he wanted his deputies to talk in a language he could understand.

Here, we use codes ranging from 100 - 702...
i.e 100-130 will be Offenses against the person
200-230 will be Offenses against property
300-330 will be like DV, Disturbances, Street Disturbances etc
Mainly there will only be 30 codes per the 100 in the main code system.

Then we have classification codes to be linked with the main codes, got about 30 of those.
All of these codes are used by Queensland Coppers.

Here 10-9 means repeat also. This is a good example of the problem with ten codes.

I used a mixture of the two most of the time but they are ones I have found are universal in many counties...

10-9 = repeat here as well. 10-37 a traffic stop, The place I worked before here used 10-16 for a traffic stop.
The first stop I made here I used 10-16 and gave the location and plate info, good thing the dispatcher had a little common sense and knew what was going on. She just repeated my radio traffic and replaced the 16 with 37.
We do have one or two dispatchers that would have had a total come-a-part and freaked out not knowing what it was.

I think you will find that 10 codes are not universal and that is why many departments are going away from them. If you find yourself in a situation where you have departments from different states trying to work together it gets confusing.

10-9 where I'm from means I didn't copy your transmission please repeat.
10-7 means I'm out of service for an assignment or meal break

We used 10 codes AND signals. The agency I was with has now gone plain speak, I believe. 10-9 was repeat.

I don't recall that we had a code for repeat transmission. 10-7 was you were out of service, but that wasn't used for meals or coffee. 10-7 meant you were unavailable, they had no problem calling us out of meals or coffee breaks. We used a 12 code for that, but I can't recall it off the top of my head. We used 12 codes more than 10 codes. A mental case was 12-34. A B&E was a 12-21 and a DV was a 12-27.

The only 10 codes we used to any extent was 10-4, 10-7, 10-8 and 10-23 meant we arrived at the call. In fact, the 10-9 was replaced with a 12-code at one point. Why you were out of service was important to dispatch and the brass, I guess because we had all sorts of different codes for various things. But if you were 10-7, they never bothered you except for a Code Zero (officer down or in trouble).
