FBI Special Investigator / Private Eye

Have you heard of private investigators working for the FBI? I found a card at my front door that had the name and two phone numbers of the investigator.

The card starts with, "The FBI is conducting a background investigation on an individual seeking Federal Employment or access to national security information . . . "

He wrote, "A young lady who has lived with her folks 2 doors up from you needs a security clearance - you may not have known her, but I would appreciate a call"

I called police non-emergency. The officer called the guy and it's legit. I was wondering if it is common for a PI to use an FBI card stuck in a door as an official way to investigate. I'd expect a business card along with it. We don't know the person in question.

Now I know that they do that.

The government contracts things out, this is one of them. My BI was a retired FBI Agent working for one of these agencies. He was kidnapped and killed a couple of weeks later while working overseas.

The guy living across the street from me is a cop in another city. When he was assigned to some sort of Homeland Security detail, some guy came to the door ID'ing himself as FBI and said he was doing a background. I asked to look more closely at the ID he flashed because it wasn't any FBI ID I ever saw. Turned out to be the same thing. He was a retired SA contracting with the agency to do BI's.

Thanks for the replies. At least it's not an isolated case. It was quite creepy to call what I thought was an official FBI number and hear "Uhh hello".
