They are all a form of division of a geographical area patrolled by a police force.

Post = an item lodged firmly in the ground, usually for bracing a fence. Also a common method of getting letters from one area to another

beat = rhythem of a song, sound of a drum.

OK, now that I've amused (at least myself, can you tell I'm tired!!) everyone, we dont have "precincts" here. Local departments all call their area different things.

Commonly we refer to our area as "patch" as in "this is our patch".

Our official titles are a Police Station that has a Response Zone. There maybe 2 or 3 RZ's in a PSA (Police Service Area). PSA's probably equate to Counties over there. Difference for us is that we dont have a different force per county.
There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics.

The city I currently work in has a population of about 11,000 spread over 14.7 square miles, the city is divided into four sectors callled rather cleverly Alpha, Bravo, Charlie and Delta. We normally work three sector cars and a roving sergeant, due to the lower population density in Alpha and Bravo they are normally handled by one car. Each sector car is responsible for all calls and patrol in its respective sector, the sergeant acts as backup for most calls but for something really nasty other sector cars can be called in by the sergeant. If a call drops on the outskirts of a sector the appropriate car responds as does the sergeant, the ajoining sector cars, depending on current assignments, will move closer to the sector boundries to be able to respond to a second call in that sector.

When I was much younger and working in a much larger city, 1 million plus, the city was divided into five precincts, each precinct was almost like a miniature police department unto itself, the precincts were then subdivided into patrol areas or sectors.
