    P90X/Insanity

In October I will be 21 and able to apply to the academy. Is there any kind of Martial Arts classes that would be of any kind of benefit to me to better prepare me for the academy?

Also has anyone tried P90X or Insanity? If so are they good programs?

Whats the best way to prepare for the physical aspect of the job and/or the academy?

I am looking for something that would be sustainable for years to come not necessarily a quick method to get back into shape.

Has anyone used other programs/methods of staying in shape and training?

Did you even think of searching this? There was another thread of this exact title (or VERY close to it).

I say look into crossfit. I have been on the job 14 years, still smoking applicants/new hires and taking care of business with 20 year old crack-heads (while wearing gear and boots).

Yes. Take a creative writing course and a Spanish class. Both are survival skills, far more necessary than taking karate.

    Run.

Miles and miles, then run some more. Learn to like it, because you'll get lots of it in the academy.

Almost any legitimate martial art will help you in some way, but the most important thing it should do is make you (more) comfortable in a fight. For some reason a lot of people think fighting is huge in this job. Don't get me wrong, when you need it, you NEED it, but I haven't gotten in one real fight in five years. If you say the right things, at the right times, you can get anyone to do anything. The trick is knowing what to say.

Being fit, however, SHOULD be a requirement. Crossfit is awesome.

P90X is good, but ANYTHING that makes you do cardio for almost an hour a day, almost 90 days strait, will produce results. I think it's really funny that people hype P90X. If you went to the gym, spent 30 minutes on a stair stepper machine (the REAL stair machine, not those silly elliptical things) and 30 minutes with a good, varying weight regimen, for 6 days a week, 3 months strait, I guarantee results too.

I read the other thread but I am more looking for what would be a better alternative or is it worth the $$ to purchase either one. The other thread was P90X vs Insanity more than an alternative plan and I was curious if I should add martial arts into the mix if I chose one of the two programs or both. Ill admit bad wording on my part lol sorry about that.

As for creative writing I just took that and got a 98 lol. As well as Report Writing for LE =) covered there. As far as Spanish...kinda skipped it and took a little Arabic

SPM, I had never heard of crossfit but will definitely look into it

Our officers get in quite a few fights with drunk people at this stupid bar lol so was definitely curious as to the most defensive type of martial arts. I wrestled for 5 years so Ive gotten a bit of it. I thought about trying my hand at Judo. What do they usually teach at the academy? Just general self defense?
