Question At what point is an alias considered an alias?

There are plenty of forms that request you list other names you are known by. For security reasons I have a name I always use for online shopping, some of my mail, in forums, etc.

It's not on any legal document, and I don't use it for evil. I've used it for maybe... eight years now. Am I required to list this name? And if so, why?

I can't think of any reason why. Usually that applies to maiden names or if you've changed your name. I can't imagine having to list retdetsgt on any sort of form.

I have an internet birthday. I use it on any non-legal forms and never use it to defraud anyone , just to obscure my real DOB.

Confused. Are you speaking of an alias such as 'kcpronto' for shopping and mail if your real name is Janet Smithers, or are you an alias such as 'Wilma Johnson' if you are Janet Smithers?

OH MY GOD how did you know my name is Janet Smithers?! *pulls blinds*

And now you have thoroughly confused me. We're even. If that was an actual question please re-post as if you are speaking to a second grader. If it was not, then job well done and have a nice day ------>

I think what he means is... is....

Damn, that was pretty obscure... ;)

Are you using a totally different name than your given name for any other reason, would be my interpretation of his question.

Heh - okay here you go: if your real world, legal name is Janet Smithers, when you get your US postal mail, sign up for email, and/or sign up for internet forums, are you asking us about the legality of using a pseudonym or alias such as "kcpronto" for those tasks? Or are you asking about using a whole other name for those things, like "Wilma Johnson"?

What I'm trying to get at, is: When you joined RealPolice for example, in the sign up portion (that only site administrators see), did you enter your real name Janet, or did you put 'Wilma'?

I think the bottom line is, if you used an alias for things that matter to the people you're filling out the application for, you need to put it down. In our world, it's usually when someone gave different names when arrested different times.

I can't think of any circumstance where an online name used for any legal activity would be anyone else's business.

Ah, okay I use K.C. Pronto which does stand for something, in place of my legal/real name. (Like J.C. Penny). Except what it stands for is nothing near my real name.

Summing it up: Will I get in trouble for NOT listing K.C. Pronto when asked on job applications to put "any other names you are/were known by". (As if anyone would know that I didn't, but I am such a rule follower it's been bothering me.)
Sometimes freinds/fam call me K.C. and plenty of people know that's me when they see it.

It's none of their business really unless you use that name in a manner that might affect their hiring you. Again, my using retdetsgt is a personal thing and has nothing to do with anything in my real life.

My real name is James, but I go by Jim. I suppose that could be considered an alias, but I've never listed it and never had any repercussions from it.
