Question I've been taught that if someone puts a gun to your head and says "drive"...

My Mum has taught us since we were babies that if someone puts a gun to your head and tells you to step on the gas, you do. Then you crash into something like a tree or phone pole so as to send them flying through the windshield. (We always wear seat belts ourselves, of course.)

What are you SUPPOSED to do assuming this happens? (Preventative measures aside- I.E. keeping your doors locked.)

There is no one size fits all solution to this (incredibly rare) problem.

When faced with a gun, you have to follow your instincts. Sometimes the best thing to do is exactly what you're told to do, and sometime the best thing to do is fight as though your life depends on it, because it does.

You are worried (and asking about) a specific scenario that likely will never happen to you, and in fact, will also likely not ever happen to anyone you personally know, or anyone that THEY personally know.

I know it's never going to happen. I am just curious what the textbook answer would be. I find it interesting how different people view and respond to different situations. Perhaps I should have worded it what would YOU do?

There's no such thing as a 'textbook answer' for how one would deal with a gun to the head. Citicop's response holds true.

The first question that came to my mind was why on earth would your mother be telling babies how to behave is they are driving in a car and someone puts a gun to their head?

Oh... we grew up in kind of a crazy fam. I haven't thought anything of it but now that you mention it I guess I was a bit young to be preparing for those things...

We had a game we played when we were little (five or six) where one of us would be the creeper and try to kidnap while the other one would try to get away. We'd use what we'd been taught- "Okay, I finger-nailed your eyes out so now you can't see".

And later she'd say "If a naked man ever comes for you..." and she had some very specific instructions of how to deflect that attack... which she still brings up every now and then just to make sure I've got it I suppose?
And Dad would say "if you have a gun make sure your attacker is totally dead or he'll get out of prison and come for you". I used to have terrible nightmares about having to shoot people in the face. Perhaps the reason I am so terrified of having a gun?

But so many people have tried to kill Mum before I'm not to surprised she is so geared towards all that. But then again she's known two hit men so I guess her choice of friends might have had an effect on putting herself in some bad situations.

We need a separate area of the forum entitled "When TV Shows Attack"... it would include anything you've ever seen on Mcguyver and all of the CSI shows to start...

Yeah but then no one would be in this forum... which is the point I suppose.

I wonder how people's views of the world have changed since TV came along. I remember asking Mum if it was possible someone/something was tricking us into believing that we were really here. (Matrix, Trumen Show)
She told me to "Stop being so selfish. No one is going to pick YOU to be the center of a conspiracy." And then I didn't worry

... but yet they'd pick her out of a million to hold a gun to her head...

Here's what we wouldn't have: a TV show like Mythbusters to deflate a lot of myths passed on by superstition, hearsay and innuendo.

If you wait till an emergency before you decide what to do, you're already dead.

Thank you for educating us on officer safety, that's something they never teach us in training.

Well, it is a good thing we have TV then, because Mythbusters is one of my favorite shows ;)
