What does it take to become a Police Officer?

I have a few questions to ask about becoming a police officer.Becoming a police officer is my dream job. I was wondering what you need to become one, like a degree in criminal justice? If so, what kind of degree? Bachelors? Masters? Associates? Also I have never done any sort of drug or ever smoked in my entire life and don't plan to either. Lastly, I'm a really good student in school, and I have confidence, enthusiasm, and when needed a good sense of humor. Please tell me what it takes to be a police officer, and what you need to do to become a police officer.

Oh, I almost forgot I want to be a Suffolk County Police Officer and I heard that they are one of the most challenging departments to try for. Is this true?
