    expungement help

i currently had filed a petition for expungement of my records and my expungement was granted. how long does it take till my record is cleared and will it hurt my chances of working in a jail or law enforcement?

    thanks

It all depends on when it occurred and what the charges were. Although expunged, you will still have to disclose what it was you were charged with, when, and why to a background investigator.

What state are you in? Expungement means different things in different states. It still may affect your chances to get into LE. You're going to have to be a lot more specific.

Interesting. How did you wind up getting drug charges, and did you not think they would affect you getting employed in law enforcement? What's the story here?

The odds are better that you will win Powerball than get into law enforcement with drug charges. I don't live in Virginia, but Virginia officers have said in the past that expunged records there are still available for LE to view for employment purposes.

I hope the expungement means you're turned your life around successfully, but a LE career isn't in the cards for you.

well i was friends with someone who was incarcerated whom i thought was a friend. he and i ended up getting caught with drugs in which i was told i was bringing him tattoo ink, not drugs. at the time i didn't think anything would happen majorly to affect my chances with le.not until this happened. i was 22 when this happened. i had no criminal record until that point.

well i kinda figured once this happened my career field with le was out of the window. i see that this has drastically changed my life FOREVER! I was going to school to major in criminal justice and look what happens. the service said they wouldn't take me either even if my records were expunged. but since this happened i'm thinking of going into nursing!

Check with career counselors at the school of nursing. Drug stuff is a big no no in that field too. I don't know if having the records expunged would help you there or not, but the nursing profession obviously puts people in contact with all sorts of drugs so they're concerned about that too.

It may be fine, I don't know, but maybe talking to the state board of nursing may save you a lot of money and effort. I know a kid who paid for school to be a CNA and found out that past drug use disqualified him from getting a license and he'd never been arrested.

Good luck, I do hope it works out for you.

I didn't say give up on nursing, I said "ask" someone knowledgeable about it.

Otherwise, don't you think that's a pretty broad question? Probably anything that doesn't require certification or licensing would be fine.

    Whippersnappers.

I turn 37 later this month - guess I'll be crossing Federal LE off my 'available options' list...
