Pre-Service Academy

Anyone have any thoughts/ advice/ forewarning about pre-service academy? (putting my self through)

What should I expect?

What are the chances I might get a job offer while in the academy? (in GA)

Am I actually going to have a PBLE #- be actual GA POST certified...ready to work when I'm done with academy? How does this work?

Pre-service isn't guaranteed employment; however, it does show a department that you are serious about the job which also gives you an edge in that regard. There are a lot of smaller departments as well that are willing to employ you the minimum hours a year (or month, whichever it is) to maintain your certification status. This will enable you to wait it out and find other employment. Good luck.

Thanks 'realpolice'. I am supposed to be taking an entrance exam this coming up week and talk with the Cheif. I have no clue what to expect, but hoping for the very best. either way, I'm going to Academy....on my own or supported by a department

It also depends on where you are. In my part of Missouri, it is nearly impossible to get hired without already being certified. Most departments here are unwilling to pay to train someone when there are so many people willing to pay for it themselves.

Citicop is absolutely correct, good luck and remember the worst they can tell you is 'no.' << at least that what I told myself when I started and it calmed me down :D

Thanks guys. Well, I talked to the Cheif, and he basically said he had some guys that had already began the process he has to look at sending before me, but that he would be glad to sponsor me .....which means what? Anyway, academy starts in July, and I am in the process of finishing up the paperwork, so all is go there. I'm talking to the cheif tomorrow about sponsorship
