Is it possible to find someone who is in prison?

I was asked by an acquaintance to find someone who she had graduated high school with. I am usually really good at searching and finding.
I found out that the person in question committed an armed robery in Nashville in 1989 or 1990. Now, she wants me to find out which prison he lives in. I don't think she needs to know but its none of my business.
I searched the Tennessee prison and found nothing. Can prisons be searched for a certain person?

In Texas the answer is yes. I would make the assumption for Tennessee and say, "probably." Hope I get this one right!

Same for the federal system, they have an inmate locator on their website: BOP: Inmate Locator Main Page.

Can't speak for every state or privately-run prison in the U.S., but many do have inmate locators available. I'm sure a thorough search on google could also provide one with names of prisons within TN, or any other state for that matter.

Thank you all for your time.
I searched the Tennessee prison and could not find anything. He may not be living. Anyway, I am going to let her do her own searching. I don't feel safe looking for someone in prison. I'm not used to being around that crowd. I have to be careful what I do and where I do it. I was a victim of identity theft.
