Question Due to roadblocks- do you think the academy is still "do-able"??

    Hello,

I recently got accepted into my local Law Enforcement Training Center. My training starts April 12'th. I have been trying to prepare myself for this, but roadblocks keep popping up in my way and seem to be preventing me from being able to do this at this time.

    Here are the situations:

    1) I do not have the finances I thought I would at this time. I am VERY low on cash and since the academy is 5 days a week I will need to quit my job - I did a bad job of saving up for this time of schooling. Some events came up that required my money - and didn't have enough time to re-save. So I have no idea what I will do about finances.. but am scrambling around for money - and there is only 3 weeks till the beginning of the academy. THAT on top of the fact that I need a physical by my dr and I have no insurance at the time - is really throwing me for a loop as to what to do.

    2) I had ACL surgery last year. My knee is healed and I got fully released for the academy by my orthopedic surgeon. HOWEVER, I have not been running on it - so that it could heal properly. I ran for the first time last week and I over-did it for the first time running in a year. I believe that I have Achilles Tendonitis in the leg I had my ACL surgery on. My leg was not used to being used that much and I over-did it. Now, I have had to let go of running for a while to heal... and it still is not fully healed. I am concerned I will not be in SHAPE enough in time (2ish weeks) for the academy.

    3) I am being evicted from my house. I will need to move sometime over these next 6 months.. and that will be hard while attending the academy full time and trying to move out and study.

I need some advice. There is another academy starting October 2010. All the above situations could be fixed by the time of the next academy, however I am eager to start my career and future!! And I do not know what to do. From personal experience, do you think the academy is still "do-able" with all the roadblocks I am facing? Or would it be wise to post-pone it till next academy?

    Thank you for the advice.
    David Mann.

You should talk to your background investigator and/or pre-employment unit of the agency you applied with...

Are you self-sponsoring, in the hope that you'll get picked up once you graduate?

Yes, I am not sponsored. I am a non-affiliate and paying my own way through hoping to get hired by a department after I graduate.

As a BI, I would consider you a bad risk right now, due to the financial choices you have made. I would equate an eviction with a bankruptcy, and it won't look good for you as an applicant. LE does not hire the homeless.

Delay the academy. Get yourself in a financial position to do what needs to be done (even if it takes 1-3 years), and then take another swing at it.
