I just read a story of a deranged father who led police on a high speed chase with his 9 month old son. Eventually the police cornered him, so he shot and killed his son and then comitted suicide.


My question is this:

Knowing there's a baby in the car; If this man decided to shoot at the police when cornered are they allowed to shoot back? What happens if a stray bullet hits the child? Or in other words... how would such a situation be handled (assuming I'm not delving into police tactics)?
