Hiring policies of your dept.'s

I was wondering what is the hiring practice when it comes to your dept. Do they hire mostly recent college graduates or instead choose to look at those that already have work experience. The reason I ask is because I graduate college in about a year and a half and I'm worried that I will struggle to get a job because of the fact that I won't have any work experience except for my job that I have now as an RA at one of the dorms.

In what I have seen, all of our last five hires (myself included) have some sort of LE experience. For some it was simply part time police work while going to school or right after. For others, they were Full time officers from other departments.

It does sound as though you need to get some sort of work experience though.

We test. How well you score on the written exam, the oral interview and your background will all determine where you place on our eligibility list.

When I applied ( 1986) there were 3 openings and 60 applicants. Some of the applicants were already working and certified in my state and I wasn't. The other 2 hired with me were already certified.

There are 2 ways to get in. Both require a 2 year college degree (it was just reduced from a 4 year).

Entry level - Just a 2 year degree is required

Lateral - A 2 year degree and completed probabtion at your other law enforcement job. Certain other financial perks are offered.

At our Dept. There have been people hired on with no schooling, no LE experience. Nothing. And they worked with someone a while before they were sent to the academy. Kinda weird
