Is this always the case in Domestic Violence calls?

It seems like whenever a woman calls 911 because her husband is drunk and assaulted her, after the police waste 20 minutes calming the situation and putting the husband in the back of a police car she always cries that she doesn't want to press charges. For example, the Charlie Sheen case. He was trashed on Christmas and his wife told him she wanted a divorce, he flipped out, threatened to murder her, and held her down with a knife. She called 911 and he was arrested. Now Sheen is facing serious felony and misdemeanor charges like menacing, domestic violence, and second degree assault. Days after the event, his wife refused to corporate with investigators, tried to drop the charges, and wants their marriage to continue. Even though she isn't even participating in his prosecution, the prosecutors feel that they can still have him serve prison time. Does this happen often?

Always and never are too absolute. There are variables to everything.

We don't really know what happened in the Charlie Sheen incident.

Arrest papers quote her as saying he held her down on the bed, held a knife to a throat and told her:

"You better be in fear. If you tell anybody, I'll kill you."

A lot of good officers have lost their lives on domestic calls that escalated to the point where one of the domestic parties decided to attack the officer, so how EXACTLY is spending 20 minutes calming the situation a "waste of time?"

A good portion of the time, the situation will calm down by itself. I was referring to arresting the offender. If you want to cry to the officer not to arrest him, then don't call the police in the first place. It's a waste of time in this situation.

What experience do YOU have with domestic violence? Often times it does NOT calm down by itself which is why cops roll to domestic violence calls involving homicides by shooting, stabbing, bludgeoning and all lesser finalities of violent crimes.

That's what she told the police at the time. Frankly, after listening to 911 tape, she sounded awfully calm for that to have happened.

It might come as a shock to you, but sometimes people exaggerate and (gasp) even lie to the police. All we can do is act on what we're told at the time. That doesn't mean that's what actually occurred.

But again, there is no "always" nor a "never".

I generally told people that if their relationship has deteriorated to the point they need to call the police to their homes because of it, they should seriously consider getting a divorce. I can't imagine fighting with my wife to the point that anybody, much less the police need to get involved as an emergency.

Getting counseling is one thing, having the police referee is something else.

In NY once we decide to make an arrest on a domestic incident, the DAs office more often than not will go forward with the case, and even if the victim stops cooperating, its now PSNY (people state of NY) that are pursuing the case.

I mean, we're getting killed for these people and they don't even appreciate it. They think it's a big joke.

We have a DV unit that does nothing but pick up these cases and makes sure they get through the system. They provide assistance for the victim if wanted, but they will also make sure the prosecution goes forward by assisting the DA.

This is how we work too. Even if the victim has stopped coooperating we are going with persuing the case. We, police, pursue the perpetrator and bring him to court and the mayor give's the perpetrator a restrainingorder for a period for ten days. In Most of the cases, that i saw, where the victim stopped cooperating the perpetrator was convicted.
