perhaps the doppler shift changes makes the frequency of the siren higher, and that is harder to hear, but you are not outrunning the sound waves when driving 60, or even 100.
Hell, my old Agency used to take the speaker cone off and mount the "bell" in the front wheel well pointed down to the ground.

I never saw the logic in that, and half-way expected a savvy lawyer to make it an issue in a bodily injury lawsuit.

In the Netherlands they are currently testing a system that warns drivers for an approaching ambulance. Te system works with a small FM radiotransmitter and send a signal to all drivers in a perimeter of about 300 meters. The driver gets a signal on his radio that an ambulance is coming. I have included a dutch video of this systeem. The system is called "Flister"

Let's do it to them before they do it to us

Yeah, there's been one up here. Of course, Oregon likes to think it's green and diverse. But last summer there was a big uproar about that very thing. Blind people couldn't hear them and were stepping out on the street.

The truth is, with Portland traffic there is rarely just one car coming at any given time, but I guess it is a concern.

Ummm... My Nederlandese is a bit lacking, but I doubt that would fly very far over here without the ACLU getting their *** in the air.

IME, there are at least a few different kinds of "soundproofness" while driving.

    Couple of primary kinds:

    1. A well built/insulated car (which doesn't excuse you from not being aware - you still need to pay attention and/or try twice as hard to maintain awareness)

When I was learning to drive, I remember my Dad telling me to always drive like everyone else is a complete idiot. I've found that to be the best driving advice I've ever received.
