Question Colorado Technical Online and CRJ?

    Howdy,

I am wanting to enroll with CO Tech University Online to do 100% online courses in Criminal Justice. I hope to get a bachelor degree and use it to become a Police Officer. Is this school real? I mean can I use this degree to be a cop if I get it online? I would hate to spend all that money for nothing. I live in Illinois, USA if that is needed.

    Thank you in advance,
    Shawn

The CJ forum on this site has a lot of good info if you'll take a look:

    1. Looking for a school/degree program in your area?

    2. Accreditation... what does it all mean?

A lot of these schools end up more expensive and less useful than regular colleges. When my youngest daughter got out of high school, she looked into one of these "institutes" to take courses for being a travel agent. A 4 year bachelor's degree in business would have been cheaper.

Also, if you check around the forum, you'll find most of us recommend a degree in something other than criminal justice.

Colorado Technical University is a real school. Its in my city and I'm frequently assigned the beat its in so I drive by it all the time. Guy on my shift has his degree from there.

Whether or not their online program is any good I don't know. But it's a real school.

Oregon Technical Institute is a real school too, but it's still a rip off. That's the one that wanted 10 grand to teach my kid how to be travel agent....

Well my buddy got his bachelors and is now working on his masters in Psychology so it's not one of those "Associates degrees only" schools you see on TV all the time. And their course catalog is pretty diverse for a tech school. Can't speak from experience but with the fact they have doctorate level classes, and that my buddy is happy with the school, I think it's legit.

Thank you Officers and Sergeant :D for your replies! It is very pricey at CTO, 50,000+ pricey but I can only do it online at the moment. I work in coal mining and my shift is 4 days on call, 4 days off. My days off are constantly rotated as you can see so going to classroom college courses will not work.

I was a security guard for 5 years but I can not do that again because I couldn't make enough money to even get a decent vehicle even in armed security!!!

I am just unhappy at my current job because its not something I want to do. I have always wanted to be a cop and maybe someday get into homicide investigation.

    Thanks again fellas!

Ya know, you don't have to have a degree to be a cop in most places. Academies teach you the basics of being a police officer. A place like CTI isn't going to help you that much.
