help with laws on carry a five inch ka bar on my belt

I am a truck driver that travels in different states. I do food service deliveries in the middle of the night and some during the day. Is it illegal for me to carry a five inch fixed blade ka bar on my belt while on the road and during deliveries. If approached by law enforcement about the knife what should I do? Or I am just going to be in big trourble? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Why do you carry the knife? Have you trained to use it?

First off it depends on the state and even the municipality you are in. Try looking up the states you run on your route on google.

Having carried a k-bar on my hip I know how it can get in the way working around heavy equipment. Why not get a nice pocket knife. It is easier to carry, and just as easy to access.

Thank you for the response. I use mainly for work for opening boxes etc. Some of the places I deliver to are not in the best areas to say the least. I'm often in and out of the restaurant sometimes twenty to thirty times in one stop at night with the doors open and by myself. I have had people either walk in looking for free food etc. Or I will come outside and turn around and they will be standing right behind me or the pallet. So having it on my belt I feel a little safer. Would you suggest getting a ccw permit but then again traveling to several cities and states kinda defeats doing that because each city and state has different laws. I do also have a rex applegate covert folder fast knife from gerber that is a pocket clip would that be a safer carry? But if I am not concealing the ka bar or acting like a fool or suspicious person would I be okay. I just am trying to protect myself from creeps and not get arrested at the same time. Thanks again for any help.

Thinking it over more and more I am gonna just stick to the applegate covert folder. Although I favor the fixed blade ka bar I also favor my job I would not want to lose it over getting arrested on my route for carrying a illegal knife. Thanks for making see the big picture.

My usual run now take me through CO UT AZ CA and NM. I used to go out your way in NE a lot . Those I80 scales make a driver nervous but keep up the good work out there.

In NE it isn't going to generally be a problem as long as it isn't concealed. That doesn't mean the public won't make a call or something. It is still legal to carry an exposed firearm in public in NE but I wouldn't try it unless you want to get called in.

I can't speak for other states on their laws. The biggest thing would be to let the officer know that you have it.

Cool thanks again Smokey Bear. If any other officers or patrolman from those states I listed that I travel through have any more info or advice I would appreciate it. All the more info I gather from you all the better off I will be if I do have to explain myself to an officer. Trust me I am not a thug or trying to be some sort of bad *** but the more I read local news stories about crimes and stuff from different states you almost would be better off carrying a gun. People are getting more and more desperate as times get harder and harder. I have two kids and want to make sure I make it home each week safely.

With Kalifornia on the list, I'd be willing to bet that a weapon of mass destruction like that will be illegal.

Why not just stick to your handy dandy little work issued razor knife? I've seen some people carved up with those, but it doesn't do much for the intimidation factor.
