What would a cop do in this situation?

I am writing a christian romance novel, and one of my characters is a homicide cop. He was just dispatched to a scene where a girl's father has come home drunk. Her father decides to take his rough night out on her and begins to push her around. She calls 911 and the cop arrives at the scene. I would like to have one other cop come into play as backup. But I don't know what would be a normal police procedure in this case. Would they kick down the door and remove the girl from harm? Imedietly arrest her father? Please help! I just need to know what an experienced cop would do in this situation. Thank you and God Bless!

Of every one hundred men, ten should not even be here. Eighty are nothing but targets. Nine are real fighters, and we are lucky to have them, for they make the battle. Ah, but the One... One of them is a Warrior... He will bring the others back.

Welcome to the forum. If you will look, you will see a note at the top of the ASK A COP forum a stickie telling you what to do to post here.

But let me ask, do you hope to sell your book, or are you writing it for profit? I would be happy to discuss my consulting fee with you. Just drop me a private message.

That could go any number of ways. If the girl is a minor, then it's considered child abuse and she's removed from the home and he's arrested. If the girl is adult, then it's treated like any other domestic violence case. We don't kick down doors as much as you think.

Why a "homicide cop" would respond to a 911 call of that nature anyway is a separate matter.

A homicide detective investigates death, not domestic violence. The only way he is going to go there is if the girl is dead, which would make for a very short, read non-existent, romance. A romance with a corpse is illegal and would get the detective fired or moved over to the fire department.

Kicking down the door would require extigent (sp?) (emergency) circumstances. If there was evidence of domestic violence, such as marks from slaps or punches, then whoever caused those injuries would be arrested. An arrest is pretty much madatory due to the Violence Against Women Act of 199X (4?).

An experienced cop would call either Jack Bauer, Dirty Harry, or Chuck Norris.

I can offer you my knowledge of a 30 year police career.

Homicide detective wouldn't be there in the first place.

And WTF is a "Christian Romance Novel"?
They've got us surrounded? Good. Now we can fire in any direction, those bastards wont get away this time

An amateur will train until they get it right. A professional will train until they can't get it wrong.

I'm beginning to realize that Democratic politicians believe criminal activity is but an entrepreneurial activity on the part of disadvantaged people. And that the police are but another circumstance to deprive them of that opportunity.

Some good answers provided thus far

    Let's review

    1) introduce yourself according to this thread:
    ** BEFORE posting in "Ask-A-Cop" **

    2) why would a homicide detective be responding to a domestic disturbance?

    3) discuss consultation fee's with txinvestigator1

    4) negotiate a deal with "patchcop." You may be able to get his price to $45. an hour

    5) what is a "Christian Romance Novel"?

My recommendation after completing step 1:

Change the scenario around. Have an officer on scene of the domestic disturbance requesting immediate back up. Have the homicide detective on his way home from a busy day at the office. He hears the radio call for back up and notifies dispatch that he'll respond since he's not too far away. Now, we have him on scene without the concern of dispatching him in the first place

Now, I'd be interested in hearing how "romance," and "Christianity," come together

    And God bless you too
