    A million dollar question...

If you could not be a cop any more for what ever reason could you guys, or would you guys work for a convicted felon??

As you guys know I have been out of work for some time, a long time. I recently found out my boss is a convicted felon, not sure if that amounts to anything or not.

He was convicted for mortgage fraud (not sure what that means). Anyhow, he did his time (7 years in federal prison), now he's out of prison and he's flipping houses.

I am a carpenter / handy man / whatever you want to say.. ,I do the renovations for "him" / "the company". I have no reason to believe what he is doing is dishonest in any way, but let's say for $hit and giggles it is, would I, as the carpenter / handyman / whatever, have anything to worry about if he was being dishonest again???

What are your feelings on ex cons? do most of them get out and go straight, or do they tend to go back to their old ways??? and would you work for one??

Probably not but it would depend on a LOT of things.

You never know. Should you have reasonably known, are you listed as part of his company, etc...

What are your feelings on ex cons?

    Shaker/container of salt.

do most of them get out and go straight,

Doesn't really matter what the ratio/percentage is if the ONE that you're interacting with is the ONE that stays criminal...

or do they tend to go back to their old ways???

    See above two replies.

and would you work for one??
Depends on a LOT of things.

    I appreciate that answer.

I do not have access to "his" / "the company's" books, nor do I have any information on what the properties "the company owns" / he owns are going for.

All I know and do is, the renovations work for a living.

Had an elderly neighbor who would have died on the gallows in the early
1950's for murder but was commuted to Life. He got out after 15+ years. Never did crimes again and a quiet very pro-law-enforcement guy. I trust him.

Crime is a culture and way of life. Some make a clean break, but the "lure of easy money" i.e. in Miami Vice "Smugglers Blues" is always there. Excuses, blame transfer, and lies usualy means they have not changed.

Not all of the assholes have been caught and thus acheived the status of felons. Those few felons who clean up are no longer assholes.

Do we actually get $1,000,000.00 for answering this question? If not, that's blatant false advertisement.

"False Thread Title Fraud," a felony on RP

To answer your question, I don't believe all felons should be grouped in the same category

Mortgage fraud felony is a tad different that armed robbery, attempted murder, rape, etc. So, working for your current boss, IMHO, is OK working for those that the example felonies above, I'd have to say absolutely

While I would agree that not all felony crimes are created equal, many violent street thugs engage in economic crimes like mortgage fraud (just ask agents with Housing and Urban Development IG). Committing mortgage fraud, to continue on the same example, isn't armed robbery, but it also isn't stealing a pack of gum at the local Stop-n-Rob, either. If someone is relaxed enough in their moral compass to commit mortgage fraud, what else are they able to do (me personally, I'm not comfortable putting my trust and family's livelihood in an employer with that sort of character flaw)?

A whole lot would depend on it. What the crime was, what the business is now and what would be my job. If the person was popped for armed robbery when he was 18, he's now in his 40's and wants to hire me as a welder in his shop, I would see no problem. If he had been convicted of drug sales and wanted to hire me for security, there would be a problem.

A few of my cousins are convicted felons. A couple are still low lifes, but a couple apparently learned their lessons and are working for a living now. From all accounts, they're fairly upstanding citizens.

Quite frankly, if you want the true answer to your question, it will cost you, oh, say, about a million dollars!

Since I was very young I knew what side of the bars I wanted to be on.

I have integrity and I wouldn't throw my integrity away for just anything.

If it's illegal I don't do it. I'd like to think of myself as a model citizen.

If they're been to the pen for some of those charges I wouldn't trust him.

But I don't trust many people.

    Valid point

I would have to look at everything before I would consider dealing with this employer or anyone with any history

Ha! A lot of my former command had never been the pen and I trust some ex cons more than I trust them.

I've been screwed over by ladder climbing police more than any ex con ever has.

That being said, I would judge every situation on its own merits.

No crappola, Jim. We have all probably worked for felons who just haven't been busted yet.
