ILLINOIS OFFICERS is it legal to have a siren console in your vehicle?

hello im a police explorer and at my department we have limited use of squad cars for when we do scenarios. I was wondering if i could outfit my car with a siren ONLY FOR USE WITH EXPLORERS but im not sure if that is legal, and sadly neither do my advisers who are to lazy to find out haha. I know in some states its legal to have sirens on your car, as long as you do not use them on the road, but im not sure about illinois.

    Justice-

Welcome to the site. You sort of introduced yourself in your question, so I will not lock the thread. But you DO need to move over to New Member Introductions and post an intro there as well so we can get to know you.

Having said that, I don't know about Illinois Law specifically. It would technically be legal in my state.

    BUT
it's a horrible idea. All it takes is for ONE of your friends to think it would be funny to hit it while in traffic to get you in a world of trouble.

Cops don't have sirens in their personal vehicles. I think that it is safe to say that Explorers don't need them, either.

I applaud your enthusiasm, but stick to using what the post provides. It's not worth the potential downside, IMHO.

Citicop is definitely 100% on. Also, you don't want to end up being looked at as "that guy" by the police officers and other explorers. I for one can tell you that if an explorer put a siren in his vehicle and it would make its way around the department quickly and he would probably get called to answer questions about it (sometime between everyone joking on him).

I think it also gives the APPEARANCE of impropriety because folks would be wondering why you NEED a siren in your car.

Like Citi said, we applaud your enthusiasm but it's just not the way to go.

A portable recording of a siren would accomplish the same thing that you want to do, and would be a LOT cheaper & raise far less questions.

I think you should be a good little Explorer and use your chain of command. Learn it. Live it. Love it.

Somehow I think they'd take exception to being characterized as "to lazy to find out."

If it's legal in your state, a kid with a siren in his car is just BEGGING for trouble. I know here in Arizona they are expressly forbidden except for emergency vehicles.
Of every one hundred men, ten should not even be here. Eighty are nothing but targets. Nine are real fighters, and we are lucky to have them, for they make the battle. Ah, but the One... One of them is a Warrior... He will bring the others back.

    "Wrong door, buddy!"

Let no man's ghost say my training failed him.

Perhaps the Explorer is too lazy to find out as well. If an old retired guy from California can find it, so can you.

No siren and no treat for you.

    (b) No vehicle shall be equipped with nor shall any person use upon a vehicle any siren, whistle, or bell, except as otherwise permitted in this section. Any authorized emergency vehicle or organ transport vehicle as defined in Chapter 1 of this Act may be equipped with a siren, whistle, or bell, capable of emitting sound audible under normal conditions from a distance of not less than 500 feet, but such siren, whistle or bell, shall not be used except when such vehicle is operated in response to an emergency call or in the immediate pursuit of an actual or suspected violator of the law in either of which events the driver of such vehicle shall sound such siren, whistle or bell, when necessary to warn pedestrians and other drivers of the approach thereof.

    Actual conversation with suspect
Suspect: Why am I under arrest?
    Me: For posession of CDS.
Suspect: Man, it wasn't CDS! It was E pills!

If at first you don't succeed. . .don't try skydiving!

Skip the siren, save your money for push bumpers, spot lites and a light bar
