Do you keep your job a secret from strangers?

when you interact with strangers and the topic of what you do comes up, do you lie or do you state that you are a police officer. I would think that with all the safety concerns that comes with the job, that it would be wise and safer for one to keep the fact that they are a police officer away from as many people as possible. For example, if an officer was to join a dating site and have on their page that they are a police officer or when they start messaging someone back and forth that they would want to keep their job as far from discussion as possible

My wife frowns upon me joining any dating sites. Unfortunately, my neighbors knew before I even moved in. When I bought my houses, the realtor spread what I did to many of the neighbors before I even countereed with a bid on the house!

In most intances, it is on a case-by-case basis. It is not hard to figure out in the context of things if there is any need/harm for it to be disclosed. If I feel like keeping it to myself, it goes just like each time that I am on a plane... I revert back to my old job, working in a cancer research lab. I can bore them with science talk good enough that they will not ask me a second question about what I do.

You don't have to "lie" to dodge the "Where do you work?" question. If I'm a police officer for a city PD, I can say, "I work for the city," which is just as true as if I said, "I'm a police officer."

In real life, people very rarely asked me what I did for a living. If they did, I generally just said I worked for the city. People rarely care that much about anyone else. Now if I mentioned that I'm retired, no one ever asks me from what.

When we spent a week in Turkey three weeks ago with five other cops and got asked what we do for our living we all said, that we work in the Cologne Zoo.

In other times I tell people that I'm a garbage worker, special branch "Human Garbage". Nobody understood that until now and I tell the truth!
