I usually tell em I work for the phone company or one of several other entities I have ID for.
Working as a P.I. for 2 years, I once told an inquisitive neighbor that I worked for UPS Quality Assurance as a UPS Inspector as I staked out an access road from 1/2 mile away from my target.
Think about it: Who checks up on the UPS man?
Its also not a Federal Offense to represent yourself as a UPS Inspector if you are not.
I also once told a Deputy Sheriff from a distant County that I was a subcontractor for the State DOT, doing a Traffic Count on an isolated intersection. I even had a prepared tally sheet to show him. After he advised the Complainant, I flagged him down and 'fessed up to the Workman's Comp case I was working. He told me that his complainant was concerned for a young woman who had recently been a victim of Domestic Violence, and I was parked beside her driveway. That damn subdivision was built on an old horse farm and there was absolutely nowhere to hide that wasn't obvious or I didn't stick out.
I also carried a hardhat and traffic cone around with me, which came in handy one day when a property owner thought I might be illegally dumping on his vacant land. I told him I was a subcontractor for the Cable company, waiting for the Bosses son to show up for work.
Needless to say, I had the prepared business cards to back them up. All of the phone numbers would lead you to a circuitous voice directory of these large and ponderous Organizations.
Overall, I have to say that I was a bit surprised at how easy it is to fool a lot of people.
Active LEO's might want to take note if they run into people claiming to be such as I.![]()

My Inalienable Rights were given to me by God and NOT by the Government.
