    Patrol Bag?

    Hey all,

I'm (hopefully) graduating police academy here shortly. We just had a class in which one of our instructors gave us a quick look into his patrol bag to see what he usually brought on duty. We didn't have much time and it wasn't a detailed explanation. With that said, I would like to know if any of you can provide me with advice on what to pack in my bag when I go out on FTO. I have a bag already, but I could use some advice on what to buy, i.e. brand of handcuffs, gloves, etc? The department I am in is a highway patrol unit if that makes a difference

Wouldn't you rather ask your FTO and/or coworkers?

Likely your agency has specific requirements on what equipment you use while on duty - and the responses you get on here may make little sense. (eg. arctic gloves in Florida, flashlight lens cover for a model you don't use, etc.)

I will say that one thing to possibly think about adding to your Christmas list is the Streamlight Stinger LED flashlight: Streamlight FC Stinger LED w/AC Flashlights & Lighting

They're great! I've been out of patrol for over 2 years and still carry one.

The streamlight stinger LED has great battery life, and is amazingly bright. I have 2 batteries, and swap them out maybe once a month (but carry the extra battery in my bag every night).

I wouldn't buy anything just yet. I agree with GoDirectly2Jail, ask your FTO, ask others in the office and make a decision on what you need, want and like. What may be efficient for others may not be efficient or even in your budget now. Be Safe.

Some stuff I use all the time...

A regular sized terrycloth towel, cut in half. (hand-towel size isn't big enough)

A large straight-blade screwdriver. (about 8-10 inch with 1/4-3/8 wide tip)

A six-foot nylon dog leash. (a good one. Lots of uses if you're creative)

A small half-sheet sized clipboard. (very handy)

A fifty round box of duty ammo.

A full box (20) Bic or Papermate stick pens

At least 3 mechanical pencils. (pens don't write when it's below zero)

If you wear contacts, an old pair of your prescrip glasses.

    A hand-size stapler.

    A cheap pocket calculator.

    A travel-sized container of aspirin.

A two Dcell LED Maglite as a back-up light

An umbrella. (go ahead, laugh now. thank me later)
