What would you do in this situation?

Sorry if this question is a bit random/strange.

Let's say you pulled someone over for speeding on the highway. When you get to the driver side window to ask the driver for his driver's license/registration, you can see that he's drenched from head to toe in what appears to be blood. There aren't any weapons visible in the car and the driver acts 'normal' and complies with your instructions. He doesn't appear to be under the influence of narcotics or alcohol.

What can you do as a police officer in that sort of situation? Would you tell him to step out of the vehicle so you can do a pat-down for any weapons? Or would you search his car?

Or would you just write him his speeding ticket and send him on his way?

    Thanks in advance

Back in the early 1970s I had a similar scenario.

Pedestrian sitting on the curb of the roadway, covered in blood, sobbing and irrational. My partner and I began to calm him down and eventually he stated that his dog had become terminally ill so he took the animal to the mountains and killed it with a rock. He could not bear to watch the animal suffer.

When we found the dog's remains it was beaten so badly that it appeared to be more of a rage beating and animal cruelty case than a sympathy death.

We successfully prosecuted him for animal cruelty. Turns out the dog bit him as he tried to sodomize the animal.

    Good investigations have happy endings.

Cops get paid to be nosy. Good cops will investigate anything out of the norm until they reach a logical conclusion.
Be courteous to all, but intimate with few, and let those few be well tried before you give them your confidence!

If you and your children lived in the neighborhood where this traffic stop occured, would you want the ticket written and blood-soaked driver just sent on their way, with no questions or investigation?

I'd check for a paper cut and see if he worked in admin....

Of course we would talk to him about it.... Jeez.......
Apparently, I'm supposed to be more angry about what Mitt Romney does with his money than what Barack & Michelle Obama do with mine

A subject covered in what reasonably appears to be blood (and if it is that much you should recognize the copper smell) would not be allowed to continue on their way until we got to the bottom of it.
