    Question About Police Investigation

Before I get to the question a little background information is necessary.
About three weeks ago we were informed that we were being investigated by the Division Of Social Services on the suspect of child abuse. Our daughter, who is 15 years old, knew nothing about the report. We have family issues, are in family counseling, and are working on the issues. We went through the process of the investigation very quickly. Once we were made aware of what the allegations were we very quickly discovered them to be obviously false, as did the investigator. The allegations stated that we had four daughters, two in college and one younger than my daughter, and that there was heavy drinking and physical abuse occurring in our home. We have one daughter and one son, do not allow alcohol into our house and are strongly against any type of physical punishment. Mistakenly, we did accuse our daughter of filing a false report because we could not figure out where the report had come from. The case was quickly closed after a speedy process and we went back to our lives, not knowing where the report came from or why it was filed. As the investigator told us, sometimes reports just come in unfounded and by persons whom do not know the family. We suspected it may have been a case of mistaken identity due to the confusion of our family.

Two days ago my daughter got a phone call from her best friend, who is a freshman in college (she's just turned 17) and whom she calls just about everyday. Her friends father was being asked to turn over phone records, every week, for about the past 2 weeks. All that her friend knew was that the records were being requested by the police, under the mention of her middle name that we rarely use, that a case had been opened, and that she was not supposed to know or tell us this. At this point we have heard nothing of this, and know of no one else who's being asked to hand over phone records. Both our daughter and her friend are very scared about this, and none of us have a clue what is going on. The only thoughts at this point are that we have done nothing against the law and cannot figure out what or why they are investigating. Is it possible this has something to with the DSS case? Is it legal to be doing this? And what reasons could they have for doing this, especially what is the use of phone records?

Your daughter's middle name? This makes no sense. Who told who not to tell you? What does the friend's father have to say about this? The only thoughts at this point are that we have done nothing against the law and cannot figure out what or why they are investigating. Why would they want calls someone else made if they are investigating you? They would be interested in calls coming to and from your house if they were investigating you. Again, makes no sense. Is it possible this has something to with the DSS case? Is it legal to be doing this? And what reasons could they have for doing this, especially what is the use of phone records? The police can ask anyone to do anything. Asking him to voluntarily give the info isn't illegal. However they can get that info with a subpoena and not tell anyone squat if they have a criminal case going, and probably would go that route.
Was the investigator the police or DSS? If DSS cleared you, the police would have no interest in that particular allegation.

    Other questions and answers embedded.

Do you realize how nonsensical your questions sound?
    1. how do you jump from phone records of someone else to an investigation of your family
    2. why do you think ANY of us here on this internet forum would have ANY information about whatever might be going on
    3. even if any of us DID have some information, do you really think we'd tell you if the case is still open and ongoing?
