    Junior in highschool looking for advice.

    Hello everyone,

    My name is Fred and I'm currently a Junior in high school.

    I've been thinking long and hard about where I want to go in life, and I've decided I really want to become a New York State Trooper.

    I realize it will be a tuff thing to do. And I really need some advice!

    I'm not a "tough guy" I don't pick fights, and I'm clean. No drugs or alcohol. I have a very even temper, and I don't get mad very easily.

    What should I do? I was thinking about taking Krav Maga. Would that looked good on a resume?

    Also, what's the training like? What should I do to prepare?

    I'm currenlty working as a housekeeper at Glensfalls Hospital, but when I turn 18 i'm going to switch over to security would that be good experice while I'm in college?

    Man, I have a ton of questions, sorry.

    I look forward to responses!!

    Thanks,

    Fred Rohde.

    Finish high school, take a minimum of two years of college and then choose your career path. Believe me when I say that four years from now you may opt for a different career path. If not, then prepare yourself with the best education you can get and begin applying for the agency of your choice.

    You will be a better person for having taken a little time to evaluate what you want to do for a career for at least twenty years.

    Good luck to you!

    In addition to the college, think about getting an early start. Many high schools allow you to start taking core classes through community colleges before you graduate.

    First off, my belief is that no one should know what they want to do for the rest of their life while in highschool. That said- If you really want to be a LEO, check with the agency you think you like or another local agency and see if they have an explorer program. It will give you a little exposure to the job.

    Actual conversation with suspect
    Suspect: Why am I under arrest?
    Me: For posession of CDS.
    Suspect: Man, it wasn't CDS! It was E pills!

    If at first you don't succeed. . .don't try skydiving!

    Note: Any laws I quote or mention pertain to the state of Maryland unless noted otherwise.

    +1 call around your area and see if any of the agencies have an explorer program. For you it would be a great experience and would help to show you what being a LEO is all about not just the stuff you see on TV.

    As far as the martial arts go, that's great it can't hurt but don't get into it thinking it's everything you're ever going to have to know.

    I posted this list on a different thread but it applies if you really want to be a LEO;

    Here is my advice;

    1) Keep a clean record - driving (speeding and/or traffic tickets) and other - no arrests for stupid stuff.
    2) No Drug use or DUI's
    3) Steady employment - dosen't matter where just don't jump from job to job.
    4) Get a degree
    5) Think about the military (hint: military takes care of 1 -3 & even 4 if you play it right)
    Wrong door, buddy
