I guess my opening statement addressed the main issue fairly well:

"Rather than thinking only about yourself, try to think of the motorists/people below you on the street. They see a person with alcohol hanging his feet out of a window and think there may possibly be a jumper! Simple as that..."

Partner, you missed the point. You allege you are a former USAF SP. You should have paid attention to your training and duties. I think you have inhaled too many exhaust fumes! What makes you so special in society that you can disrupt the status quo? You need to learn to live within society and its moral conduct. Appreciate that others may not share your specific desire to sit on a window sill, dangling your feet over the edge and not expecting people to have concerns over your intentions!

You need to grow up, accept that you are a single part of a community and not all omnipotent.

Your deed, if calls are made to the police department about a possible jumper, takes officers away from their assigned tasks to address your specific comforts.

Keep it up and hope that no one else gives a darn.

Good luck! Keep the dirty side down and keep on challenging authority. Your attitude is showing.
Be courteous to all, but intimate with few, and let those few be well tried before you give them your confidence!

So be it. Deal with the consequences.

What you really came here to ask was: "Exactly how many times can I tell a police officer 'You can't make me!" without getting my butt arrested?"

The answer to that is... it depends on the officer. Speaking for myself, I'd rather you learn that via trial and error.

Lastly, here's a quote that applies: "If you decide to yank the tiger's tail, you'd better have a plan for dealing with his teeth".
Here I thought the above was the best post. How much you want to bet that some poor beat cop is going to get, " I spoke to Sargent X and he said it's OK for me to sit out here so I don't have to put my legs in and you can't do anything about it".

USAF SP's must have changed from when I was in.

But to give you a little credit you are half right.

I wanted to know how to deal with an officer who was telling me not to do something that is not illegal.

CITICOP pointed out that there is in fact a potential legal issue with sitting on the ledge.

I hadn't thought of that aspect and that is why I came here to ask the question.

CURT you reinforce a stereotype that LEO's should be trying to overcome.

It would seem you are more interested in making an arrest than making peace.
Damn. Looks like I've got another sleepless night ahead of me, because an anonymous Internet poster doesn't like or respect my opinion.

I guess I better put on a pot of coffee.
