Will this give me a better chance?

I have tried searching the forums already but could not find exactly what i was looking for, so my question if as follow.

If i were to join the NYPD ( i already took the test and passed) would this give me a better chance of getting a position in the SCPD or NYSP when the tests come around or a good chance of getting transferred?

Maybe someone on this forum had that luck of getting transferred from MYPD to SCPD

Any information regarding this would be very much appreciated.

    Thank You

    a better chance? no.

Neither SCPD nor NYSP does lateral transfers. That means another academy.

So SCPD or NYSP wont take that into consideration? That you have more experience and have worked in the NYPD.

So is their such thing as a "better" chance to work with the SCPD or NYSP? For instance, taking internship or working as Auxiliary or have a degree in CJ?

One more thing, So you just have to be pretty much lucky to get into the academy?

    Thanks

Prior experience and training is always a plus when applying for a different agency.

Since neither of your two agenices of interest accept laterals, that means you would have to test and interview just like everyone else. It also means that, since you have the prior experience and training, if it boils down to one-on-one competition, you may get slightly higher consideration over one who does not share similar experience or training.

Education, experience and training all add to your resume.

BUT since both NYSP & SCPD are civil service, and you're nothing more than a #, until that # gets called, its completely irrelevant.

That is what the testing process is all about: numbers! There is no other way to establish a list of competent competitors. You can't just list a bunch of names and throw them into a hat for hiring. You must compete and you must score the highest to be at the top. As I said, "...Education, experience and training all add to your resume." They help to put your name in the higher category, they do not give you free access.

My dept will take laterals, but you have to pass all the same tests as someone coming in off the street and you're put on a list in the order of your score. They hire from the top of the list down.

The fact you're a lateral only comes into play regarding training and initial starting pay, you get to do a shortened, local academy and have a shorter time with an FTO. Your probationary time is the same as everyone else though.

Out of state police officers are not considered lateral.

You asked if being NYPD gives you and edge in being hired by the NYSP or SCPD, etc... The correct answer is: NO!!

Both agencies are civil service agencies, meaning there are set rules who gets hired and who does not. It starts when you take the written test. They process from the top scorer downwards. If you pass each phase, you move onto the next. If you complete them all, you get hired. Getting hired has nothing to do with what you did.

As a LEo taking the tests, you are actually at a adisadvantage because the correct answer is based on a situation and your response with NO police experience yet once trained, it is hard to thin klike a civilian. Thus there has been some issues in NY where cops on the job are failing entry level tests.

Now once hired, will that previous experience help you? Yes and no. In the academy you will have to learn to do it "their way" which may conflict with what you know. That is where many get in trouble becuase they think the old way they were taught is the best way and do not want to conform. However, the laws do not change and that is a huge relief for you as you will not have to relearn them. Same with some fireamrs stuff, DT, patrol tactics, etc.... And once in the field, off course your prior LEO experience will help.

But as far as getting a job with the NYSP or SCPD or NCPD, it is worthless and will not do anything for. Civil service jobs don't care what you did before, it is all about how you socred on the exam and passd the structured hiring process.
