    Security Lights

    Hello,

I recently installed "Green" security lights in the dashboard of my Dodge Durango slt plus. I run a little security at my local Circle K gas station but I was wondering what would happen if I had an emergency and used them on the public streets? Would I be pulled over if everything was installed correctly and I had a siren? What would the police say if I got pulled over? The reason I ask is because my sister has a child that's physically and mentally impaired, and he sometimes has seizures that needs direct attention from a Doctor. I live in Lexington, Kentucky.

Any answer that's sufficient would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Thomas

If you're not in public safety, you cannot operate your vehicle as an emergency vehicle. Having green lights and being a security guard doesn't exempt you from this requirement. Leave it to professional paramedics, who drive ambulances appropriately outfitted with emergency equipment, to get your nephew to a hospital. If you have an emergency, call 911, don't play "hero" and wind up in a lot of trouble.

Yes, you would be pulled over and arrested for illegally operating your vehicle as an emergency vehicle. KY law is very specific on what is defined as an emergency vehicle or public safety vehicle: http://www.lrc.state.ky.us/KRS/189-00/910.PDF

Also, having a siren all by itself (unless installed in an emergency vehicle) is illegal: http://www.lrc.state.ky.us/KRS/189-00/950.PDF (see paragraph 1)

Plus they can get to his location and get drugs on board with authorization from their medical director. They'll stabilize him then move him to the ER faster and safer than you will be able to.

Seizures are rarely a life-threatening condition. Since you live in Lexington, KY, I would imagine the local EMS service can get there in plenty of time if an ambulance is needed. I don't see how working security at a gas station would warrant any type of light on a vehicle. Mall security has such lights for the purposes of visibility and being a deterrent on their property. My advice to you, remove the light & siren. ROS has provided laws that show it is illegal.

Unless your a doctor, you are not exempt from speed limits even in the most broad interpretation.

No you may not use a siren. Call for an ambulance who, are authorized emergency vehicles.

I do not work in Lexington, but I'm a Kentucky officer. You would definitely be cited if not arrested. Google KRS 189.920-950, it specifically spells out what qualifies as an emergency vehicle.
