    Question about police firing

If a police officer is fired during their probationary period (in this case one year from date of hire) where they can be let go for almost any reason, are they told why they were fired (i.e. complaints) or is it just "thank you, we decided you weren't a fit?"

Will this information get passed on to future agencies the person applies for?

Yes to all the above. The reason can even be for not being a good fit. They may or may not give more details.

How many agencies doing this would it take to end a person's chances for a career in LE? An acquaintence of mine has been through 3 departments now (let go last week) and still thinks he has a chance at another department. When do you tell him to hang it up?

Despite the mounting evidence and some pretty obvious character flaws (to everyone but him) he still thinks he's the shiznit of law enforcement. When do you beat him with the stick of reality or does he just have to hang out there and discover it himself? I don't know if they are petty reasons or not but<> I think applies to police employment pretty stiffly.

Any probationary employee who is let go before probation is over should very well know why the action is being taken. A good FTO will periodically meet with the proby and discuss issues with performance that do not meet minimum standards.

In the end, if the employee is cut they is usually given a letter or memorandum that simply states something to the effect that the employee "failed to meet minimum expected standards and is no longer considered trainable."

Additionally, most are told they have a choice to resign or be terminated - the choice is theirs.
Be courteous to all, but intimate with few, and let those few be well tried before you give them your confidence!

Some people are just pathologically unaware. Besides, it's not your responsibility get him to see the light. He probably wouldn't believe you anyway.

I got a probationary fired years ago, I was his last FTO. Everyone else had given him barely passing evaluations, I thought he was horrible and wrote him up as such. When confronted, his past FTO's agreed with me.

He continued to apply for LE jobs for years. I know this because I kept getting contacted by agencies he applied for. He never got hired, I hope.

This is why agencies need to do good background investigations.
If you have left two agencies in less than two years, it probably
    isnt the agencies fault.
On a clear night, I can see the other deputies emergency lights at least 10 miles away.
But it isnt flat here LOL

The sad part is that unfortunately there will be an agency out there that wants to save money on sending someone through an academy, or thinks they are getting a seasoned Officer so they will give him a shot. He may go through a few more agencies before they finally get the hint. You are correct though, you think he would have taken the hint by now.

Some people are just simply not cut out for this line or work, no matter how hard or how often they try. It doesn't say anything bad about them, just that they're barking up the wrong career tree is all. Unfortunately, some refuse to see or accept that and just keep on trying and trying until they don't have a choice but to look into something else for which they are more suited.
