    PT questions

I am currently working to get in the best shape possible so that i can try out for the Huntsville Police Academy when they have there next session which may be in the spring. I know the minimum physical standards for that department, 1.5 mile run in 15min, 22 push ups in 60 sec., and 25 sit ups in 60 sec, plus there obstacle coarse. My question is this, of the recruits that make it through the academy what was the average or the "normal" time for the run and push ups as well as set ups, because i don't just want to make it by doing just the minimum. Just wanting to know what i should shoot for. Thanks.

Contact Huntsville and ask them for the end of academy PT requirements.

There's no way we (as people who don't work for that specific department) could tell how how the average Cadet performs in the PT test for that department. However, I think you should probably shoot for 12 min 1.5 mile, 35-40 pushups and 35-40 situps. I think that would probably put you *near* the top portion of your academy class if you are accepted for training.

I know that each academy is different but i was wondering about the mix of pt and classroom instruction during the average academy, does it lean more to the physical side? Is it similar to military boot camp or what? Is there anyone here who went through the Northeast Alabama Police Academy in Jacksonville, Alabama?

Most Academies are becoming "similar" in a loose sense of the words. A militaristic style learning environment with some type of physical training.

There was a televised academy show that aired a few years ago.

Hulu - The Academy: Black Monday - Watch the full episode now.

3 miles, though I've heard of some academies going 6-8 miles.

These are the recommended minimums for persons entering training at the CHP academy. If you can do these, chances are you will not have an issue with the agency you are seeking.

    Physical Training.

Cadets are expected to pass a variety of Physical Fitness Tests and the Physical Performance Program Test. To prepare, cadets should be involved in some form of strength training program (a circuit weight training program is advisable). In addition, prior to reporting to the Academy, cadets should develop an endurance to:

    (1) run at least three miles, three times a week, at a 9-minute-per-mile pace,
    (2) perform 50 to 75 sit-ups (unassisted),
    (3) perform 50 push-ups, and
    (4) perform four pull-ups.

This will ensure each cadet meets the minimum incoming acceptable level.
Be courteous to all, but intimate with few, and let those few be well tried before you give them your confidence!

Longest rub was about 5 miles. To graduate we had to run 1.5 miles in something like 11:23, 48 situps in 1 minute and I think it was 35 pushups no time limit but you couldnt stop and start.

There's no magic pill for pushups and pullups, you just have to do them regularly to build up. Do as many as you can (doing correct form, because they won't count any during your APOSTC academy if you don't use correct form), and then try to do a few more each day than you did the day before.

APOSTC requirements are to do 22 pushups, which isn't hard if you dedicate yourself to doing them regularly.
