This question is inspired by countless soap opera plotlines. IIRC, romance novels will also use this tactic:
If a couple gets married to avoid being forced to testify against each other in a criminal case, how long do they have to stay married before it is obvious that they only married to circumvent the law?
Does this tactic actually work in real life? Does it ever even come up? On soap operas this sort of thing happens "all the time". But I would think that in real life it hardly ever happens, if at all.
But if it DID happen, would it work?
Now I know this sounds like a frivolous question, but for those of us who keep our real life drama confined to the television it is Very Serious Business.
