    Turning right on red light..

Hello Officers. I have a question that has been on my mind and I am glad I came across this forum.
I have witnessed several times when people turn right on red, that they cut off people who have the green light. I have had someone do that to me and I had to hit the brakes.
I think its common sense to wait until there are no cars, or at least a safe distance away, to turn right on red.
It seems like they push their way in and expect you to slow down so they can turn. Bugs me to no end!
    I live in northern NJ.

Have any of you ever pulled over someone who has cut off someone in this situation?
    Thank you for your time.

Yes! Used to do it all of the time. Here is what the CA law says, and I am certain that NJ law is similar in context:

    Circular Red or Red Arrow

21453. (a) A driver facing a steady circular red signal alone shall stop at a marked limit line, but if none, before entering the crosswalk on the near side of the intersection or, if none, then before entering the intersection, and shall remain stopped until an indication to proceed is shown, except as provided in subdivision (b).

    (b) Except when a sign is in place prohibiting a turn, a driver, after stopping as required by subdivision (a), facing a steady circular red signal, may turn right, or turn left from a one-way street onto a one-way street. A driver making that turn shall yield the right-of-way to pedestrians lawfully within an adjacent crosswalk and to any vehicle that has approached or is approaching so closely as to constitute an immediate hazard to the driver, and shall continue to yield the right-of-way to that vehicle until the driver can proceed with reasonable safety.

    (c) A driver facing a steady red arrow signal shall not enter the intersection to make the movement indicated by the arrow and, unless entering the intersection to make a movement permitted by another signal, shall stop at a clearly marked limit line, but if none, before entering the crosswalk on the near side of the intersection, or if none, then before entering the intersection, and shall remain stopped until an indication permitting movement is shown.

    (d) Unless otherwise directed by a pedestrian control signal as provided in Section 21456, a pedestrian facing a steady circular red or red arrow signal shall not enter the roadway.

    Amended Sec. 1, Ch. 14, Stats. 2001. Effective January 1, 2002.
Be courteous to all, but intimate with few, and let those few be well tried before you give them your confidence!

    [George Washington (1732 - 1799)]

Someone making a right on red has to
    a) come to b full stop
    b) proceed after it is safe to do so

If you have the green, and you're forced to brake suddenly, and you're traveling the speed limit, or less, then they fail to proceed when its safe to do so.

Around here, we call that "Failure to Yield," and it comes in all types of accident-causing varieties: FTY (From a Private Drive), FTY (Turning Right on Red), FTY (From Stop Sign), and my new personal favorite, FTY (Left Turn at an Intersection) which is how my beautiful patrol car got mashed into a giant heap of twisted metal and is now decomposing in the back corner of the city garage *and* how I got this 8 inch long 3rd degree burn on my right arm that looks like Freddy Kreuger's face that's going to scar and turn into a lifelong reminder of how some people have no business getting behind the wheel because they can't F-ing drive.

I have seen people make left on red lights too. Yesterday I saw a close call with someone turning on red. Just cut right in between 2 cars like it was his right. I was hoping their was a cop around, but there wasnt at that moment. I wanted to pull him over for stupidity..
Bob, sorry to hear about your burn.

Unfortunately, Oftentimes even when we see violations, we have other, more important things to do than to stop the motorist.

Sweet Lord, ain't that the truth. I see the BEST violations when I'm on my way to some call that can't hold any longer....when I'm available, it's all center brake lights and no turn signals.....
