Pending battery charges for self defense

I was recently involved in a physical altercation during a softball tournament and was attacked by a fan from the other team that was by my dug out. My only method of response was to defend myself after she ran up to me to fight after a few exchanged words. The fight involved bodily injury and she was hospitalized and I was the one arrested even though I was not the aggressor. There's about a 20yr age difference between me and the victim, which is being used against me. Also on the police report, there are only statements from her witnesses even though the responding officers took statements from my witnesses. I was also attacked by her son with a bat (who is over age 18) and was told I was not able to file assault charges on him. I myself did not have a weapon and was far away from the victim to wait for the police to respond to the scene when her son attacked me. I am very worried about the situation because I am not a violent person and this is my first time being in any kind of trouble. Can anyone give me advice on what to do or what I should be facing punishment wise?

Just an update. I hired an attorney and spoke with a detective on the matter and they did some investigation on the incident and contacted my witnesses. All charges are dropped!! Thank god!!! Thanks for the advice because I probably would have tried fighting it by myself.

Yea, I was so happy about it because I was so worried about what to do about work and school... I'm taking a self defense class through school now to try and learn alternate ways to defend myself... And about the season, I'm not sure... I haven't stepped foot on the field since that day in fear that I would run into her or any one else from that day and end up having to defend myself again... People don't know how to let things go :/

Perhaps you don't wish to answer, but my question would be: Where the heck were your team-mates? Didn't they come to your defense and help remove the unruly persons before things got physical? I think I would look for another team.

lol @ the girl fight post... But in response to your question papabear, I wondered the same thing. Then again, I didn't know the people on my team too well because it was my buddy's team and they were short a person for the tournament and asked if I could fill in. They did let it go on for too long and it shouldn't have resorted to me having to knee her to keep her down from continuing to fight because she wouldn't quit. It ticked me off especially when they knew she was acting violent in a game before ours that she participated in. I didn't worry about it because we weren't playing her team and didn't know she was going to stay for the game, but it was obvious she was trying to pick a fight with everyone. A lot of her injuries could have been avoided if someone intervened to help me with the situation. They didn't break us up until the team we were playing ran out of the dug out to jump me. I guess they all wanted to see a girlfight and thought it was funny. Wasn't too funny when I couldn't get ahold of anyone in my family and had to sit in a jail cell for over 16hours. I'm just glad it was dropped because I was clearly defending myself and they were trying to argue that I was too excessive, but I didnt have a choice. I was surrounded by a lot of people I didn't know and couldn't see if she had a bat or a weapon because she caught me off guard, so I defended myself in a way as if she did have a weapon. Just glad the detective understood my side.
