gaining access to military base abroad

I have a question regarding military bases abroad. Since many of you have been in the military and maybe some were MPs I was hoping someone can answer my question...

IF someone WERE to be turned away at the gate to a military base and they returned and tried to gain access by some other means (like climbing a fence if that is even possible) and were caught would they be charged under US law or the local law? Would it be a simple trespass charge or is it worse because it's a military facility? What are the chances of being...shot at? The person is not armed and has no intention of doing anything illegal once inside.

I know this sounds crazy, but I would like to know...

I understand your point.

But I'm not asking for advice on how to get in there illegally, but rather what the consequences would be. I doubt the bad guys want to hear anything about what could happen to them. They're usually convinced they'll succeed. ;) If anything it would be a deterrent. :eek:

So if a US citizen tried to get into a US military base in a country we're not at war with, unarmed and for personal reasons only, they'd ship em to Guantanamo Bay, torture them and hold them indefinitely? To accomplish what? :confused:

I'm not saying they would, but they can. Going onto a secure military base for any reason illegally is a really dumb idea. And depending on the base, they may not buy the personal reason story.

And how do you know everyone at Guantanamo is tortured? But the point is, right now with the Patriot Act in force and terrorists posing a threat, I wouldn't recommend it. Not everyone who commits acts of terror is a Muslim, Timothy McVeigh for example.

Screwing around with the military is poking too big a dog in these times.

The military operates under a completely different set of rules when it comes to maintaining integrity of a perimeter and as such, can/will use deadly force to repel any attempts to breach said perimeter.

Classic example of shoot first, ask questions later. Especially in another country....

And they aren't being guarded by trained police officers either. Sometimes it's kids with M-16's who take orders quite literally. They can talk about your "personal reasons" in your eulogy.....

Slaughter is absolutely correct about getting shot. I was stationed on a SAC base that had "hot" birds on the tarmac containing nukes. The base was stateside and civilians did get shot/shot at attempting to infiltrate, especially near the flight line and weapon storage bunkers. And RDS is absolutely correct, the vast majority, if not all, pulling the trigger were young men between 17 and 19 years old. The personnel older than that had usually moved off static security sights into supervisory positions.

This was also while Vietnam was still active and we had "peace marches" which turned into riots and some hippies thinking it would be cool to lie down in front of a hot B-52 so they could not take off and bomb anyone.

I thought we popped off quite a few rounds in the Air Force, but I heard the Marines on guard duty would light your *** up.

Yep. That's why I'm not choked up about putting military on the border. They are trained and rightfully so, when in doubt put out a line of fire. And I don't mean Smokey the Bear kind.

If I used all my training as an infantryman in police work, the crime rate might have gone down, but there would have been a lot of carnage out there. It's a different state of mind and training and it needs to be. Going onto an active military base is entering a different world from Wal-Mart.
