    New officer ??

I have a good friend long time of mine that was officially hired by a local Police Department in GA yesterday.

I say officially because his FTO signed off on him and the department gave him a take home car yesterday.

I take it he will be hitting the streets for the first time by himself tonight, so my question is what would more valuable gift for a new cop?

    1. Two extra sets of extra (pink) ASP hinged cuffs and a set of leg irons.
Issues are the smith and wesson hinged..

    2. A 38 police special (6 shots), or a glock 26 for a back up.
His issues side arm is a glock 21.

    3. A Mossberg 590 A1 12 gage pump shot gun, 8 +1, side saddle, speed feed stock and ghost rings.
    No shot gun issued..

The only option that would cost me out of pocket money is #1.

If he is allowed to carry a long gun, then #3 for sure. He's more likely to need that than #2.

Make sure you get it properly transferred under the laws of your state.

    Thanks for the reply.

Yes his department let's them have long guns and back up guns, but it's at the officers expense. The only requirement is that the officer has to qualify with whatever they buy before they can carry it.

I have the receipt for all of the firearms I own, and I only buy new firearms from dealers, so it should be a problem for him or myself.

I called the Gun store to find out about a private sale. They said they can do the transfer for me for 25.00, but then went on to say has to do the background check and fill out the paper work and that would cost 25.00, so in total 50.00.

Then they told me under Ga law all I have to do is get a copy of the guys DL and weapons permit if they have one and that's it, no bill of sale needed. I do not have to do a background check or anything, that seems silly to me but it is what it is.

Rather than buy it, and transfer it, you could always pay for it for him instead, or give him a gift of cash, and he could purchase it himself, and write it off on his taxes as a job related expense.

Before you buy a cop buddy a firearm, I'd check to see if whatever gun you plan to purchase is approved by his department's firearms policy. My agency, for example, is pretty restrictive, so if someone bought me a gun that wasn't approved, it would be sitting in a closet. As already suggested, it might be a better idea to give the money to your friend (maybe even a gift certificate) so that they can buy the weapon themselves, and ensure it's one they are allowed to carry.

I would love to do that for him, but the problem is my cash flow situation, it would be easier for me just to give him one of mine that I don't use.

Both are like new in the box. The 590 was only shot 10 times before it was placed beside my bed. The 38, it's nice, but I never understood why I bought it in the first place, it is my only revolver.

His Department is open choice, they can carry any make and model 12 gauge pump they want, so long they fully pay for it.

This brought to mind what happened when I bought a Walther .22 for my kids to learn to use a weapon.

I stood in line at the gun store to buy the weapon. Guy walks up, asks if I have an AZ concealed weapons permit so I don't have to to do the background check. I said nope, but I do have my credentials on me identifying me as a federal agent. He said that would not suffice and I waited for the background check.

I thought that was funny and weird.

Which is yet another reason why the Sarge has an AZ CCW.
Of every one hundred men, ten should not even be here. Eighty are nothing but targets. Nine are real fighters, and we are lucky to have them, for they make the battle. Ah, but the One... One of them is a Warrior... He will bring the others back.
