Unhappy Can I turn it in stolen

If you loan someone you vehicle and they do not bring it back, can you call it in stolen? Someone told me that if you give them the keys you can not report it stolen if they do not bring it back when they are supposed to. Is that true?:(

Call your local law enforcement agency and ask them. Each state may have different requirements for that kind of incident.

Thank you

Thank you for your advice, I feel really stupid, I loaned a (friend I thought) my car over a week ago and they still have not brought it back. They also will not answer their phone for me. I guess I need to learn to stop being so nice. :(

you can do a report for unauthorized use of a vehicle, which should get it on the hot list so that you can get your car back.

In my state that crime is called "Breach of Trust".

I don't know if that will get onto a hot sheet here or not. It didn't used to, but it may have changed by now.

If you're lucky, they'd get Hitler's fate.

That would be stolen here. What you are talking about sounds like "community property" to me. Here, if someone has general access to the vehicle (such as a girlfriend/boyfriend, roommate, etc... anyone that knows they can use your car at will) and they take the vehicle, even without your express consent to do so, the vehicle is not stolen.

Loaning your car out and not getting it back would not qualify as community property here in WA.

You could try going to a Court and getting a warrant placed on your friend.....

It isn't like that...this is just a friend's son that I was helping out... by giving him a little work to do in my yard so he could earn a little money. He asked me if I would give him a ride to the store. I was busy so I told him he could take my car... I hadn't payed him yet so I figured he would go to the store and come right back.

Well... hours go by and then a couple of days. I tried several times to call him and no answer. He finally called and said he had been having some problems and he would be at my house around 11:30 am. Still no show...next he text messaged me, and said he would be a little late...well that was last friday. I have known his mother for quite a while and I really do not want to get him in trouble, but I need my car back.

The next communication I had with him was another text that said he would have brought me my car back but he felt like he was being threatend because I told him exact words [i]"(you little shit...you better bring me my *******car back, do not make me have to come look for your little ass and I am serious)".[i]

I would have already turned it in stollen, but several years ago, someone I know loaned a girl her car to go to work in, and she did the same thing and if I remember correctly.... she had to serve her a notarized letter demanding the car be returned before she could even report it stollen. Even then she had to wait another 30 days to do so.

Man I tell you what... no good deed goes unpunished! Jerks like this little snot nose make it hard to trust anyone, even people you know a long time.

At this point I am not even caring, that his mother and I go way back and are pretty good friends...I want his but in jail for stealing....or borrowing my car and just deciding he wants to keep it! Last time I help out a friends kid with anything!

I say that but I am really way to kind for my own good!

Not to mention I feel like a total idiot and the last thing I want to hear is there is nothing we can do! I suppose that is why I haven't already called the police, but I know the longer I wait the more of an idiot I will sound like trying to explain the situation to anyone. So I guess I will have to swallow the ole pride and call the police department tomorrow morning and hope they will not tell me that I am... as dumb as I feel!

Now with that off my chest...How was your day dear?
