Any Police Officers from Nevada here?

    Hi,

I have a question for Nevada police officers or those familiar with the Nevada DMV.

I lived in Nevada for about 8 months (September 08 to June 09). In June, I moved to a different state. My vehicle is now registered and insured in my new state.

A few weeks ago, I received a registration notice in the mail from Nevada. I went to the Nevada DMV website to send in the notice and chose the "I moved out of state" option. I gave them my new license plate number as well. After I submitted the form, the site confirmed the following:

"Insurance Verification Processing - Verification Response Confirmation

    Vehicle Information
    VIN XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
License Plate Number XXXXXXX (new plate number)
    Vehicle Year XXXX
    Vehicle Make XXXX
    Registration Status ACTIVE
    Insurance Lapse 06-25-2009 to
Your Response Moved Out of State

Your insurance verification response has been accepted. Do not mail back your Motor Vehicle Insurance Verification Card. Please retain a copy of this confirmation for your records.

You will be mailed a certified mailer confirming your selection because we were unable to verify the information you provided. However, no further action will be needed from you."

So I just received the new mailer and it states the following:

"Nevada law, under Nevada Revised Statute 485.318, requires that motor vehicles be covered by liability insurance at all times while actively registered. The DMV will be suspending your registration privileges effective 9-17-2009 for the following reason: Moved - unable to identify."

So, I'm a bit confused here. My vehicle WAS covered by liability insurance at all times (Sep 08 - June 09 in NV and Jun 09 to present in my new state).

In NV, it is incumbent on your insurance company to notify the DMV that you have insurance. If for whatever reason the DMV isn't notified, the DMV automatically suspends your registration. Since I moved and no longer needed a Nevada insurer, I'm assuming that my Nevada insurer didn't notify the DMV.

Anyway, I still visit Nevada from time to time, and I would still like to drive in Nevada. How do I get this issue resolved. The Nevada DMV is telling me to ignore it as if it's not a big deal.

    Any help would be appreciated.

To answer your first question, yes, there are quite a few of us (NV LE) on here, however, more just browse than post.

To answer your second question, this is common and actually just a DMV issue, not something that Law Enforcement will be able to help you with.
You are correct in posting about the insurance and NV DMV and how things work.
The insurance company has to notify NV DMV when they begin coverage with someone as well as when they STOP coverage with someone.
My guess is when you moved and stopped your NV insurance, that company did what they were supposed to do and notified DMV that they are not covering you here anymore. Maybe DMV suspended your drivers license because you moved out of state and your new insurance company never told DMV that they are covering you (which I wouldn't expect them to do, since they are another state all together).

Do you still have a NV Driver's License?
One way to resolve the problem would be to get a drivers license in the state you moved to.

DMV here is a bit of a pain and far from easy to work with.
Things were much more efficient and made more sense in NY (in regards to DMV).
    Thats just my personal opinion.

If your worried about the driving status, I know your not going to want to hear this, but the only person to contact who can tell you anything or change anything is going to be, you guessed it, the DMV.

    Good luck.

When you moved From Nevada, did you turn in the NV plates? Did you get a receipt for such?

Get a letter stating that the vehicle was insured from x date and is still insured, including the VIN, and make some phone calls, get an address, and mail a certified return receipt requested copy of that letter.
