I have two older military-issue, fixed-blade knives with heavy leather sheaths, both with a blade length of about five or six inches. Since I've gotten them, they have never left the house as I'm afraid to carry them anywhere without some sort of permit.
I've searched the GA Code in reference to knife laws, and about all I can gather is that knives are not covered by a concealed firearms permit and there are concealed-weapons laws that apply to knives. Beyond that, and the law seems vague and I'm wondering how police officers react to knives in general.
I've been the victim of a couple of violent crimes, and am considering carrying a weapon when I leave the house alone for a significant amount of time (such as camping; obviously not to a park, bar, federal building, etc). I do not have any firearms training, and until I do, I will not be carrying a gun at all. So, I'm wondering about the knives.
I have no intention of carrying these knives concealed. I would only wear one, and it would be in plain view, connected to my belt via the sheath. However, as I would prefer not to break the law or get on the wrong side of an officer... ;)
Do any of the officers here know of any laws in Georgia pertaining to fixed-blade knives meant for defense (possibly combat, as they are military-issue)? In general, and if legal, how can I expect an officer to react to seeing a solitary woman with a visible (but sheathed) knife? Is a sheath itself considered by officers to be a type of concealment?
(sorry for the length, I just wanted to be clear)
