Layman seeks info re sex offenders (re Jaycee case)

I;m a layman interested in learning more about the training (etc) police officers are given re dealing with sex offenders, particularly in light of that case in California, Jaycee, the woman who was imprisoned for 18 years.

There was a case a year or 2 ago in Austria in which a sex offender had imprisoned someone.

All this has me (and no doubt 0ther civilians) wondering. Here are some of the things I'm wondering about:

    1. How many cases are there of unsolved disappearances of young women or girls?

    2. Does training inform officers that this phenomenon--convicted offenders imprisoning people--exists, the parameters of it, etc?

    3. If an offender has been released (time served, not on parole), does the law have any provision for surveying or inspecting his premises?

Any other observations that law enforcement officers have on this matter will be appreciatred.

You will never hear about any training we receive.

We will definitely not share any of our training with you or the knowledge we have gained as a result of that and our work. I read the post and thought of the case that's been on the news lately with the guy who imprisoned a girl for 11(?) years in his back yard!

I will say that the questions unsettled me for a few reasons.

    Simply seeking to learn more!

    Ahh, such suspicion!

I doubt that the training that LEOs get is secret. I imagine that if I wanted to learn specifically what training LEOs get, I could probably find some textbook or paper in a journal about it.

OK, so don't tell me about the training. Talk about the situation: how common is this sort of thing (must be fairly uncommon, otherwise, we'd have heard of more incidents), tell me anything I have not read in media accounts about this.

I think the suspicion that others are referring to is due in part to the fact that instead of knowing about the Jaycee case that's making national news, you know about a much more obsescure example in Austria. In and of itself, doesn't mean anything, other than you have a fascination with this type of crime. This could be due simply to hearing about the Jaycee case and wanting to find out more about this type of crime, or it could because you have other motivations for learning more about police procedure in this matter. We don't know you, and have to ask ourselves why someone is asking about police procedure and training in this sort of thing. If it's truly innocent and out of curiosity, then there's no need take offense to what others here have posted.

With that said, most cops on this site are local and state patrol officers, whose job is often to respond to calls by dispatch. Complex crimes like human sex slavery are worked by investigators, often by federal agencies due to the crimes crossing state and national borders. Specifics about this sort of training are not "secret" in a classified sense, but do go into police tactics, which is deemed law enforcement sensitive information, and is not open for discussion with the general public. It helps to maintain the integrity of our police tactics, because if curious yet innocent inquries can be made by the general public to law enforcement sensitive information, the offenders who don't want to be caught can gain the same information.

No question, you could. You could search the Web and find out most anything you wanted to... but this won't be the place you find it.

tell me anything I have not read in media accounts about this.
Not possible. Since we don't know what or how much you've read in the media, therefore, how would we know we wouldn't be telling you something you already know?

Not to mention the fact that most cops don't care to provide a 'rubbernecker' with horror stories just so they can get a cheap thrill. Book stores are loaded with "true crime" paperbacks. Knock yourself out.

If you really want to see what we see, know what we know, then come down and fill out an application, take the tests, and put on the uniform.

May I respectfully suggest that it's not a great idea to try to read the minds of others, and instead, ASK QUESTIONS if you have them? Particularly if one does not have extensive training in human behavior.

I have no such "fascination" with the example in Austria. I happened to be overseas, on vacation, when the case first made the news. Back home, my local radio station carries the BBC, and I often listen to it, and the Beeb carried quite a bit of news about the case.

Most of my interest arises from this: here are 2 cases of sex offenders imprisoning others. I think any curious person has to wonder, "how common is this? Could this explain other cases of missing young persons, particularly girls?"

Nope, many of us curious types wonder about a multitude of things OTHER than that...

    , "how common is this?

    It happens. Enough said.

Could this explain other cases of missing young persons, particularly girls?"

It could (i.e. there is that possibility).

Thanks for your reply. Seeking one more tiny favor...

Y'know, it would be a big help to me if you could give me a list of the things I'm not supposed to be curious about.

Hmm..on second thot, it's selfish of me to burden you with extra work for my personal use. It would be easier, and no doubt more comprehensive, if you could refer me to an organization or book that could give me such a list. Thanks.

Uh, I don't think anyone here wants to talk to you about it.... I thought that was made fairly clear.

It wasn't "investigators" that cracked the Jaycee cases was it? Just damn good cop work, same as Oklahoma bombing. :p :D

Some times all the training in the world means nothing compared to just damn good cop work (or dumb luck - but i prefer to refer to my good pinches as damn good cop work) :D:D

And as to the original poster, you might not be anything more than a curious person. That is fine. But the person who reads this thread later might not be just a curious person.

It is fairly common that training techniques will not be discussed on this site. I have been a cop for near on 9 years and have just started in my third dept. When I went through the last Academy, I still learnt things that my other depts did not teach. I have learnt things on this site and passed them on to depts I have worked for. Police work is complex and it changes with the times. It is challenge to do this every day and stay one step ahead of the dirt bags. There is no way we are sharing all those little tricks we learn to the mass population.

    LOOSE LIPS SINK SHIPS. ;)

Don't take offence to it. If you really want to learn the tricks, join up and do the job.
