    Internship Trouble

I am conducting a 300 hour internship this semester towards my masters. I have already completed a 100 hour for my B.A.. Advanced internships are to be more in depth than the "seeing if you like it" internships. What do I do if I have been assigned to a Deputy Sheriff's Officer whom does not like "riders" and refuses to speak the entire shift? I ask questions regarding callouts and scenarios. Nothing more because he will not answer. I understand the mentality he has, however, I really would like to learn something. I will not report him to the Sheriff, but I need to know how to possibly break the ice. He will not even let me out of the car to gather information, not even to review administering a PBT. I am required to compile reports in the SO and for class, no names or information pertaining towards the actual cases are used. What do I need to do?

Collect what you can for your class assignments, but don't expect the officer to bend to your whims regarding your class assignment, it's not his job to do so. During a ride along, you are to do two things: 1) observe what is going on on shift, and 2) do exactly what the officer says. If the officer says you are not to leave the car, that is exactly what you are to do, and complaining about this to his supervisors (or worse, the sheriff) is childish and completely uncalled for.

As a ride-along, your safety is the officer's responsibility, in addition to taking calls and dealing with things that come up on his shift. Some officers don't like doing ride-alongs, and there's really nothing you can do about it (except maybe asking if there is another officer to ride with to "broaden your experience," vice complaining about the one you're with). If his personality is one where he doesn't want to talk to you, see if another officer is available to ask questions to after the ride-along, but you need to throw out this mentality that it is this officer's responsibility to do anything and everything for your school assignment. Get whatever information you can, explain it to your professor if you're limited on getting any further information, and see if there are additional officers available to gain additional information. But do all this while acting like an adult, vice a tattle-tale who's not getting what he wants.

Buy him lunch. Tell him your assignment and your goals and thank him for having you tag along.

But don't expect to get out of the car. He doesn't want to watch out for you and himself at the same time. Stay in the car and observe.

I can't stand having riders, but that's just me. Also, "reporting him to the Sheriff" will do nothing but have you cancelled as ANY ride-along. He is not REQUIRED to answer your questions or speak with you at all.

What you COULD do is politely speak to someone there and say that you'd like to ride with others if possible to get a wide experience.

We have a winner, you might also try another agency.

We're technically not allowed to anymore - but I've taken my dad and an old partners' brother when he came back from Iraq.

I only took people I knew, never walk ins... A lot of guys do like the company, I guess though.
Apparently, I'm supposed to be more angry about what Mitt Romney does with his money than what Barack & Michelle Obama do with mine

I'll rephrase that. I hate having riders who are in the citizen's academy or a ride-along program. I've taken a buddy here and there, which is a different situation. There have been times I've been TOLD to take a rider along out of that academy, and I REALLY hated it. Why are you doing this? What was that for? Can you do this or that? What if I did this or that? Have you ever shot anyone before?(that's a rich one) blah blah blah blah blah .... I'm always temped to answer that last question with .... *edited*

The only acceptable riders for me are those I am training.
