    Advice about the Police Corps

I know I have to make the final decision if I want to do this or not, but I just wanted to get some input from those that have heard about this program or know anyone who has done it. I just found out about this when I went to go talk to one of my professors. I see it as an opportunity to have a job after completing the Police Corps training program and meeting other requirements.. One of the things I'm worried about is the idea that they decide what department I will work for for the next four years. If I don't like it after those four years I can always get a job elsewhere. Atleast I have my foot in the door. Can anybody that knows anything about this respond telling me what they know and if they know anyone who has done it and if they liked it. Do they get the same respect as those that applied and got hired and also do they send people to small towns in the middle of nowhere or to the cities. I don't know how many states do this, but I'm here in Texas.

I don't know texas' program but its probably similar to GA's one. As my funds dwindle it looks more and more like I'm going to have to do this. I didn't want to commit myself to something if I had a better offer but I may have to.

you'll probly get sent to somewhere that is in need of officers, so most likely be in a big city.
Ive thought about tryin to do that, but Id rather not take the chances of being sent to a crappy department.(That coupled with the fact that MAPC was shut down) Ill probly go AD military, but thats a whole nother topic.

I guess in the end, is 30K for college worth getting sent to a department that you possibly wont like? Alot of departments(mostly the bigger ones) have tuition rembursement(sp).

tuition reimbersments is what the police corps does. 'Some times' you can get money up front, as I was offered before the guy retired, but its mostly loans paid off for you. There isn't just a random place you'd get put at, there is a list of agencies that are allowed to be choosen from. This list is made up of agencies that are proven to treat their people right, and have to give them a certain salary, usually above the other officers. This and other criteria actually makes the agencies on that list the best 'places' there are to work in your particular state. Besides, if you can't get through college due to a lack of funds, then their really is no point in getting to a place you may not like, you won't get anywhere you'd like.

    More info to add

I have two more years left in college, so they could make a difference in the choice I make. My mother is paying for my school herself with me paying for the books, I'm a Ra so I don't have to pay for housing. It's just that I would be quarenteed a job practically. Yes, there is a chance I won't like where I work, but if I did the applying way I could still end up working for a departement after doing research on it.

Our Michigan Police Corps is a great prgram. Does the following...

Guarentees (sp) a job after graduation
Re-imburses your college tuition up to $30,000
    Pays you bi-weekly (aprx 200/wk)
Pays for room/board at the university (food and place to live)
    extra 20 weeks training...

Where they make profit? I DONT KNOW

ours is being raised to 40k or at least it was supposed to. Its more about getting better qualified people into and staying into the system. In the long run, you only hire people like this, which are cheaper to train and more likely to stay on a good unit.
