    hello you all,

Hi fran. Welcome aboard. Have you ever been to the US before?
I suggest Washington, New York City, Niagara Falls, Las Vegas, New Orleans... anyone else?
How long are you planning on being here?

The Grand Canyon would be an important site to see.

I was going to say the Grand Canyon (I swear!), but I forgot which state it was in. (Maybe I shouldn't admit that?)

whats so cool about grand canyon?
I've never seen it, and I'm sure it will be interesting place to visit.

But until I see it, to me it's just bunch of rocks with dryed up water ...

San Francisco is awesome!! Its the cleanest big city I have ever been to. Drive though Crescent City CA and see the redwoods. There is a cool tourist spot in the redwoods (Shrine of the Trees??) and its amazing. There is also a restaurant on the beach before you hit town and they serve abalone. Not many places serve it.
Take the road all the way down the coast. Its longer, but prettier.
They have a Ripley's museum on Fisherman's Wharf. Corny, but I love those kinds of things. lol

Orleander is right Fran, take the coast road from San Francisco to Los Angeles. There is a terrific place for to take a break at Big Sur abut 50 miles south of Carmel on Highway One, it's called Lucia Lodge and it's on the cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean. They have a fantastic deck where you can enjoy the view and have a meal. They also have accommodation.

Speaking as an occasional tourist in the U.S. from Australia you will have a wonderful time when you visit.

The Grand Canyon IS definitely a MUST SEE! I saw it in early 2000 for the first time in late February and early March BEFORE the tourism peak hits. And I recall my awestruck feeling when I first saw it. It IS absolutely breath taking and truly a natural wonder to see. You won't be disappointed!;)

Incidentally, when I was there, I recalled seeing several tour buses loaded with people FROM Las Vegas. Apparently, there are businesses in Las Vegas who specialize in making package trips to the Canyon for a fee! Might be worth checking into!

As for other places to check out...There are SOOO many! Places that pop in my head just to start out with:

--Several places in Washington DC like Capital Hill, Lincoln Memorial, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and several other places there.

    -- Gettysburg Battlefield sight.

-- Hoover Dam just outside Las Vegas.

Man there are so many places...But definitely do the Grand Canyon. It IS awesome!!!

Oh! I thought fran was going from Washington state to San Francisco. <doh>
Mt Rushmore is larger than it looks. The museum is amazing too.
Hit one of the many cave's America has. Carlsbad caverns, Wind Cave Natl Park, Jewel cave Natl Park, etc.
Thermopolis Wyoming. My favorite place in the world. A natural hot spring.
Fossil Park by Toledo Ohio. You can dig for fossils for free. Take home what you find. mainly triblodites, seashells (brachiopods) and fish.
Route 66. A huge slice of Americana.
Devils Tower in Wyoming. The Indian legend behind it is very interesting.
Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha Nebraska. They have an indoor rain forest.
    Smithsonian Museum. America's attic.

You know what. I'm just confused. I think most of these spots are out of your way. lol Drive everywhere and have an adventure. Have a flexible timetable so that you can hit all the silly spots. Try to hit the small towns cuz they always have some kind of festival going on. And try all the different foods.
