Becoming a cop with WMATA - a joke

I just learned today that WMATA (Washington Metropolotian Area Transit Authority) or the DC metro has NO OVERSIGHT from ANY federal, local or state authority.

Now, I live just outside Washington DC and DC and Baltimore police are a joke. You apply, you're hired within 2 months. What about metro?

Is there some kind of place that oversees the police with WMATA? If not, kind of scary.

That's a heck of an attitude to have for someone who says they want to be a cop. If it's so easy to get hired on there, then I suggest you go, get hired and come back in 2 months and get verified.

And WMATA has oversight from 3 different states. From Wikipedia:

WMATA was set up with a board of directors, with twelve members. Of those, six are voting members, and six are alternates. Virginia, Maryland, and the District each appoint two voting members and two alternate members. The position of board chairman rotates between the three jurisdictions. Most board members have other jobs as well serving on, for example, the D.C. city council; the board appoints a CEO and general manager to supervise the day-to-day operation of the agency.

Really? Do you live in DC? Do you live in VA? Did you know that those voting members have NO POWER. They make SUGGESTIONS that CANNOT be enforced by anyone. Have you seen the news lately?

Today - ten workers caught smoking pot on the job
Yesterday - a work hit and killed by a train
A couple of monts ago - 9 people dead hundereds injured in accident which they were WARNED by the so called oversight agency.

So now tell me, how much oversight do you think they have?

No, I don't live anywhere near the East Coast.

And whether the states choose to exercise it or not, they do have the ability to oversee. For instance, the agency is jointly funded by the three jurisdictions. If they wanted to, the money could dry up. I promise, they can affect the agency if they choose to do so.

    WMATA Police

    1. Attend LE academies in all 3 jurisdictions (VA,MD,DC)
    2. Are certified as police officers by all 3, therefore subject to each jurisdictions' requirements controlled by each entities Department of Criminal Justice Services (or similar named entity)

Bottom line: The incidents you quoted involved WMATA general employees, not the cops..Your example compares bus drivers/train operators/track workers to LEOs. Big difference and even bigger selection/qualification/certification process. Like comparing the guy that fixes your street to a cop.

And yet you want to be a cop, which works for a government of one size or another? You do realize that cops are often underpaid for the work they do, and work for mayors, county commissioners, governors, etc., all of whom are often overpaid for the work they do, not to mention the public who are all too often unappreciative and unsympathetic to the work cops do... might be something to think about, because if you're looking for a line of work where you'll strike it rich or be hoisted on the shoulders of your peers as a hero, LE ain't it. ;)
