former marine who got busted for gram of grass wondering if that ruins my chances

Here's the story : I got out of the marines and really didn't know what I was going to do with myself so I went back to what I was used to (I know I know stupid decision on my part right!) . It was 2006 I got pulled over and had a little bit of weed an old friend had given me to help "relax" because he noticed
I was a little messed up from being overseas. It has been 3 years and since then I've got a clean record . What Im trying to ask I guess is that do I still have a shot at being a police officer?

I'm an excellent shot and have good hand to hand combat skills on top of that Im a Black belt in brazilian jiu jitsu . I run like a horse and swim like a fish. Aside from my lack of judgement I have great bearing and live a life of discipline will that charge affect me as much as I am worried it will?
Are there other things that affect employment as a police officer i.e. traffic tickets , bad credit?

Thank for your time and no matter what the outcome I will always respect the law and judgement of those that serve it.

If you apply at a dept. where applicants are getting an interview, the majority of them are going to have an impeccable background with nothing negative to reveal. You're aren't out of the loop as far as making a career out of law enforcement. But usually this sort of thing happens before you get into the military.

You may need to give it a little time. A little time that shows you can make good decisions.

You may be the next Bruce Lee, but if you lack good judgment, no department is going to hire you, as it's the police's job to exercise good judgment when dealing with emergencies. The portion in bold below is a very weak excuse, man up and accept responsibility. Don't try to explain away marijuana usage as if your friend was giving you Advil.

As stated above, you will probably need to put a few more years in between this incident and your application, and demonstrate how you've matured so that marijuana usage would no longer be an issue if hired.

In NY 1 gram (unless it was burning in public, or in public view), would be a violation called "unlawful possession of marijuana. It's not a crime, but a violation. Its still illegal, but on a lower level, similar to a moving summons. That being said, you're going to be up against people who have a) never been arrested for anything and b) never used any drugs.

I mean, we're getting killed for these people and they don't even appreciate it. They think it's a big joke.

Apply for the Border Patrol. I'm not being facetious. I'm a former Border Patrol Agent. I've heard from many sources that it is pretty easy to get into the Patrol these days. If you are a slacker, you won't get past the academy and the FTO. If you are serious about what you've said, you'll do fine.

However, if you ever become a Border Patrol Agent, you'll be in close contact with hundreds of pounds of weed at a time. You better not have any thoughts of smoking that crap anymore.

I'm being rather liberal here, becaue I empathize with your situation after coming home from the sand box. But, if you're having problems, go to a psychologist or psychiatrist. DON'T SELF MEDICATE.
    Chuck
