    Michigan Requirements

Firts of all, I would like to say that your site is excellent! Great job guys.
I want to become a Police Officer in the State of Michigan. I am 41 years old and in excellent shape. I have read several different postings about college degree requirements and such. I have read that the State of MI requires an "assoc. degree" as a minimum. (Some info is contradictory to this as well.) Is this true to your knowledge? MI also requires the passing of the MCOLES course/tests. The local Colleges have courses for LE. Several are 62 hour courses at local Com Colleges. That dosen't seem like an Assoc Degree to me. This is confusing as I search for info... Can you shed any light on this?
Also... We in MI have "Motor Carrier Officers" (part of the State Police) who do not require MCOLE. Would I be better off getting in with them first, and then trying to become a regular Police Officer later? Some advise would be greatly appreciated!

I'm not familiar with state police requirements, but requirements for PDs in michigan vary from department to department. For instance, detroit PD only requires a highschool diploma.

    Hi airborne... former Ranger?

The owner of this site is a cop in MI, I'm sure he can help you with some of it.

Not completely true. There are departments out there...cough cough...Detroit that don't require associates...only HS Diploma's. It all depends. Requirments are going up, and I for one am in favor of that...but there are still departments out there that don't require a Assoc. or Bach.

MI also requires the passing of the MCOLES course/tests. The local Colleges have courses for LE. Several are 62 hour courses at local Com Colleges. That dosen't seem like an Assoc Degree to me. This is confusing as I search for info... Can you shed any light on this?
There are a lot of colleges around here that offer Assoc. in CJ. However I don't think that you necessarily have to have a degree in order to attend the academy. Which is something that is completely different than your MCOLES Certification. You can take your MCOLES without having attended an academy. You cannot be a police officer without your certification. Now there are still some departments in Michigan that will put you thru their own academy saving you some loss wages and expenses. However those are few and far between I am finding. Usually you can put yourself thru the academy at a local comm. college. Not knowing exactly where you are at I cannot make any suggestions. If you would like to PM me for some feel free.

This I have no idea about...

However you can become a reserve, get your CCW, attend the reserves class and then work your way into the job. However I am pretty sure that you will not get paid, and you don't have full police powers, if any at all from what I have seen. You are just another car on the road for the ambiance.

I am sure there are others here that can add more. I would not do one to become the other though as that just takes more time in my opinion...Something of which I don't have. LOL I would just go full into it. Though again, that takes time and money.

    Michigan Police Requirements

Thanks for the replys! I live in Portage Michigan. If you aren't familiar with West MI, Portage is a "suburb" of Kalamazoo. KzooValleyCC and Kellogg CC both have, from what I have heard; excellent LE programs. Do you know anything about these Schools and or programs? If so, which do you recommend? BTW I am NOT a fmr RANGER! I serve voluntarilly with Canada's Aux Reserves in a (Airborne) SAR unit. We are jumpng in Normandy this June 6th for the big D-Day anniversary in WW2 kit and Aircraft! Thanks again for the help!

I think in terms of the best CJ programs throughout the state, one would be Michigan State, the other would be Ferris. I am familiar with the Kalamazoo area but not the schools you listed. Though if they are the closest to you, then that is what you will have to go for unless a move is convienient.

Auto Business! I am a Catia Jockey(designer) I have worked in the Dteroit/Auburn Hills area for years. After the Germans took over DCX it all went to S**t! I've bounced around a lot for the last few years! Sick of this crap. I would like a career that is more rewarding than a paycheck and a Computer to sleep in front of. This is one of the reasons I moved to Portage to start over!
